May actually isn't related to Peter in the 616 comics, Ben was the blood relation.

In the Ultimate comics, apparently the Parkers married sisters because May says that her sister was Peter's mom while Ben was still Richard Parker's brother

Remember the comic books Trouble?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trouble_(comics)

May was banging Richard and Ben, at the same time.

Although, it's mentioning Mary and May's choices being influenced by a "fortune teller" who I am wondering if that is Cassie Web? Probably not, never mind.

:)

Check out the Honest Trailer for this film on YouTube. Definitely makes me want to avoid it.

At some point we’ll get another good comic movie.

I don't think anyone intentionally wants to release a "bad movie" (unless he's Uwe Boll). I'm very sure that for someone at Sony Madame Web was a "good movie". Otherwise they would have directly shelved it like WB did with Batgirl.

Indeed, yes. People are too quick to slam production companies and treat them badly while ignoring that might have thought it was going to be a good movie. Hell, Star Wars was regarded as a "dumb kid's movie" and only used to expand profits if Damanation Alley failed.

Yes, people often forget that the quality of an artistic product is subjective (I mean, Citizen Kane sucks for some).

I think unfortunately that for the people who make the big decisions at Sony Madam Web was a surefire success. I admit I'm quite ignorant who decides what at Sony, but at this point I think they are the same who thought that Morbius would be a box office hit.

These are just guesses, but I think they just got lucky with Venom and thought they could repeat the same success with subsequent films. But the first time they really had to face harsh reality was at test screenings. But by then it was too late. They were not products that could simply be saved in the editing room or with reshoots. Also because, since whoever decides clearly doesn't know how to create a successful superhero film, all the changes decided will probably not serve to greatly improve the final product.

At this point I'm very curious to know what Kraven will be like...

Or maybe people are more picky post the pandemic for what they’re willing to watch at the theater versus at home. Maybe in the past they put out ok movies, and people went to see it because it was a comic book movie, making the studio money. Now, it’s stay at home unless the movie will blow me away. I think, the math changed. Higher inflation doesn’t help either.

Look, I can understand this point of view for perfectly okay films like Blue Beetle. But the critical consensus on Madame Web is that it's a bad movie. Not that it's not good enough to draw people into the room or anything. We're not talking about Marvels. Pretty much everyone says MW is just atrocious.

I’m not saying it’s good. What I’m saying is that before the pandemic more people would have still gone to the theatre to see it despite bad reviews. Now, they’re not even bothering.

I don't know, you have an example of a pre-Covid superhero movie awful as MW that made good money? I mean, "We even made fun of it during Oscar ceremony" awful?

This might be true because comic book fatigue hadn't kicked in yet. Remember the movie didn't just flop because it was bad. It was because it was bad in a funny way and also at time when people have gotten tired of comic book movies. Maybe to a point where they will only go to the big ones like Deadpool 3 and so forth. I think right now the only sure bets coming up is Deadpool 3, The New Superman movie, New Batman and Spiderman movies whenever they come out. Maybe Fantastic Four. I think we might have reverted a little bit back to the 90's when it was all about Batman,Superman and Spiderman. Not completely of course but it feels like the days of a lower rung character bringing in lots of money is about to become more rare.

I do think character recognition matters. If you’ve never heard about the character, why would you pay to see them? The brand needs to build recognition. This movie wasn’t even on my radar since I had never heard of the characters.

You know, in the last period there have been superhero films that have underperformed, films that have been box bombs, films that have been failures from the point of view of critics and audiences, but none have been the perfect storm that Madame Web was. No one has so perfectly represented the concept of failure in the public imagination, becoming an object of derision even at public events such as the Oscars.

I've been looking for other superhero movies with similar infamy and perhaps the most recent candidate is Catwoman. But really, it's not comparable having budgets and scopes so dissimilar to MW. Catwoman was a "relatively" small film, perhaps at most aiming for a sequel if it had been a success. MW wanted to be a piece in a great saga that would take the Sony-Spiderverse to new heights.

Probably the most similar example is Batman & Robin, which single-handedly put an end to the era of Superhero films that began with '78's Superman. But at least that was at least a competently well-made film on a purely technical level.

No, I think MW is truly unique, an anomaly that will be studied in film courses at universities. It will long represent the absolute bottom of the barrel for high-medium budget superhero films: "Well, at least it's not Madame Web!".

I swear, in my opinion we are faced with a historic event.
