Sorry for the late bump but the first episode was shown a few weeks ago (12/24) as part of the 25th Anniversary celebration of Macross.

I loved the first episode and can't wait till april. For the first time in a long while I felt I was watching a macross seires. not the adventures Basara and the whiny band. Alto,Ranka and all the rest are cool characters. I especially loved it when Alto jumped into the Valkryie at the end of the episode. 
I just saw this and I must say that visual it seems more in-tune to what was done for Macross Plus with hints of M7. It also seems more solid, writing-wise, than M7 and the first episode recalls back to the original series (Giant alien, young girl in distress, and an untested pilot). It certainly is off to a good start. M7 was a waste, and turned Max and Myra from interesting characters to bland background characters, but this series seems to have original characters that are both engaging and mysterious. Can't wait to see more.
Remember it's only the first episode - and a director's cut, at that. The "final" version, and the rest of the series, begin in April.
And I *liked* Macross 7, which placed me with a fair size fandom in Japan. Macross 7 is generally derided in the Western world, but the show was a success in Japan, spawning a movie and several OVA episodes. The ending of Macross Dynamite 7 is a FAR better end than that of the regular series, though.

Oh yeah got to check it out even though it's not much different then the directors cut that already aired I assume.

Probably the biggest staple to be fair, although the original has never been bettered IMO.
Can't wait to check this out though.
I actually thought Gundam 00 was an excellent return to form for the Gundam franchise after the disaster that was Gundam Seed Destiny. Anyways, at first I wasn't going to give this show a shot since i barely remember anything from the previous Macross. People tell me it stands alone very well though so I may give it a shot.
