MacGyver movie in the works

scriptwriter hired

New Line, which is developing the “MacGyver” movie, has tapped Jason Richman to pen the script.

yep, the original property.
Just as “MacGruber” hits theaters, the TV show that inspired the parody is making strides in its journey to the big screen.

If hiring Richman is any indication, New Line plans to make “MacGyver” straight-faced but still keep it fun. The WME-repped writer did uncredited work on “Rush Hour 3,” wrote the Chris Rock-Anthony Hopkins action comedy “Bad Company” and worked on a draft of “Beverly Hills Cop 4.”

Raffaella De Laurentiis is producing “MacGyver” through her Raffaella Prods. along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff. Dino De Laurentiis is executive producing.

He'd better be sporting a mullet or the movie will be an epic FAIL!

Like this?

 OMG!! That is wrong on so many levels!

^You know what would be original and refreshing? If people on the Internet would stop assuming that upcoming movies will be awful based on one or two sentences' worth of information about them.
I just think the original stands well on its own, and I see no need for a remake that will with all likelihood, judging by the slew of bad remakes we've seen in recent years, be horrible.

And I'm perfectly entitled to express that opinion without being declared prejudiced or accused of making snap judgments.

And yet it was perfectly OK to say a movie, which hasn't even been written yet, will be crap? *sigh* Why does everyone think the remake/reboot is going to totally replace or one up the original? The original can still stand on it's own, I'd rather get a remake.reboot of a property then a cheap knock off that has the sole difference of a different name.

Anyway, as a kid I loved the show, if the movie gets done and looks good enough, I'll check it out.

I was given MacGyver season 1 for Christmas, so I've just been watching it for the first time lately. Seen 5 episodes so far.

It's fun, but the complete lack of violence is a bit much. I mean, are we to believe that the bad guys just give up because MacGyver beat them? Half the time I'm left thinking they'll go right back to their dastardly ways as soon as RDA is off on his next adventure.

What's struck me most was some of the credits....Robin "Saavik" Curtis as a guest star, Terry "Daleks" Nation as a producer, etc.

Yeah, 10 years ago I would of been all for it, but I don't think it would be a good idea now. I'd be more keen on a Magnum P.I movie though.

I would be first in line to see a Magnum P.I. movie, but only if Tom Selleck is still Magnum.

Yep, I agree. I'd like to see it as a continuation of the TV series and not a reboot. I find remakes tend to miss the point when they change the genre to a comedy.

Hasn't this been in development hell for years already?

I just hope they play it straight and don't try to make it a parody or a Will Ferrell vehicle or something. Keep it authentic -- an adventure story about a brilliant, resourceful do-gooder hero who solves problems with his wits and abhors guns and violence.

Well, considering that MacGruber is coming out which is a send-up of the show, I suspect that they will strive to not make the MacGyver movie adaptation a parody.

Wasn't the WB tossing around the idea of a young MacGyver show a few years back? I remember something along the lines of Mac's young hip nephew basically doing the same sort of job his old uncle did, only with a cool pop song at the end of every episode ala Smallville.

Hmm, probably best it never happened.

I've seen the pilot. It's not bad, but it's not that good. It is just sort of there and was very dull to watch.

C'mon, Christopher, this is the Internet we are talking about here. It is a requirement that something be declared crap years in advance of any real progress being made on it! ;)

current status via Wiki:
In November 2009, the producer Brian Grazer dismissed the rumor that Matthew McConaughey will play the lead in the upcoming Magnum P.I. movie adaptation, produced by his company, Imagine Entertainment.
With a script and director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball) already on board, casting has been the project's biggest problem. Grazer told MTV: "I think the idea for 'Magnum P.I.' is to find a counterpoint, to not try and find the new Tom Selleck but to find someone that is just so different

Oh, and I just want to say how awesome it is to bump a thread that's a year old as opposed to just making a new one.

Re: MacGyver movie status

jefferiestubes8,

That's great, but weren't we talking about MacGyver?

Re: MacGyver movie status

Just watched "Trumbo's World".....Peter Jurasik with human hair is just odd.

Also, I'm pretty sure this episode was based on a short story I read in middle school.

One of the best things about watching MacGyver today is the parade of pre-sci-fi-stardom guest stars that pass through the life of The Great Mullet. :D

^Well, "Trumbo's World" was largely based on stock footage from the 1954 film The Naked Jungle.

Did they do that often on the series? I remember another episode which made extensive use of stock footage from "The Italian Job," which seemed a bit much, since the mini chase is a pretty iconic sequence.

I remember watching this series a few years back and it was alright.

But if they are now making a movie it will be interesting to see if it will be any good.

I wonder if the original actor in the old series will be starring in the movie or who will be playng him in this movie..
