Luke's other students

11Alive

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Sorry if this has been already been addressed.

Luke says Ren vanished with a handful of his students. So what became of those Force-adept students? We haven't seen anybody in the First Order using the Force except Snoke and Ren. Not even Snoke's personal guards, who could fight well but didn't seem to have the Force.

I guess we'll never know . . . unless Abrams decides to introduce those Force sensitive students that followed Ren in "Episode IX".

I took as the start of the Knights of Ren. I figure it will be addressed further in Episode 9.

That goes without saying. But where have these Knights been for the last two movies? Ren sure could have used them around.
If the First Order has conquered the Galaxy, likely they have been out leading the military might.

Not sure why they had to be around in TLJ when TFA seemed to indicate they were elsewhere, and TLJ happens shortly thereafter. Certainly, Kylo could not have forseen Rey's attack on the Praetorian Guard or that she would escape with the rest of the Resistance. He and Snoke were confident in their ability to crush the Resistance. Why call for backup?

Plus, it's pretty convenient that's there a mentioned but never seen group of elite bad guys now that the First Order is down to Kylo, Hux, and possibly a very melty Phasma.

Why not? Saruman was defeated but the Nine still rode, etc. It's a fantasy trope through and through.

I don't mean that in the bad way, just that from a storytelling perspective, it's sensible that these guys are in the filmmakers' back pocket to fill an apparent narrative hole in Episode IX, while they weren't really necessary in that way in the prior two movies. You need a second banana, but you don't need a third banana. There's no reason for Kylo to have his own sidekicks when he's still Snoke's sidekick, but now that Kylo is in charge, he needs some dark-Jedi goons. The fact that the Knights of Ren were established to exist at all seems to suggest to me that disposing of Snoke quickly was always the plan, since there's not much need for them in a story where Snoke is the ultimate villain.

My apologies. I misread your statement and I agree.

Also, there's this, from the TLJ Visual Companion magazine:

Snoke has trained Kylo Ren and at least one other apprentice.

No idea if this will come up in IX though.

Oh God, don't go down that road. If THEY can't be bothered to write this shit, why the hell should WE.

(Though I'm sure they'll be covered, if not in Ep. IX, then some comic or novel or whatever...)

Kylo abandoned his band of Jedi rebels when Snoke gave him rank, status, and made him his apprentice.

Luke abandoned the rest of his students when he went out searching the galaxy for a proper resting place.

There was no "rest of his students." As Luke said, Kylo had taken off with a handful of them and slaughtered the others.

No, the students had either joined Ben, now Kylo Ren, or were dead. Luke is pretty explicit, and the reason why his failure weighs so heavily on him. He had barely started and the Dark Side had already started corrupting his new temple.

They're like the Jabba of the sequels. Before the Special Editions, Jabba was just some guy that Han always talked about and was the reason he got frozen. We only see him in the beginning of Jedi.

We'll probably see Rey and the rest taking on the Knights of Ren as an introduction to what's going on. Now that Kylo's in charge, he's sending them out to hunt down Rey to bring her to him. He has the run the First Order now and they're his Vaders. Maybe Snoke didn't use them because they were fairly weak and he was only interested in Ben Solo. Now Kylo is in charge and gives his frat brothers nice jobs.

There's a part of me that thinks we won't see the other Knights of Ren in Episode IX. They may be so eager to introduce an all-new kind of baddie to assist Kylo that they'll kind of be left out, with their story told offscreen in books and comics (kinda like what they're doing now with the Jedi that survived Order 66).

If nothing else the vague mention of that "handful of students" is a handy way to give other storytellers an out if they want to have a certain character survive those events and not necessarily join up with Kylo. One or two may have survived and just done a runner, or initially joined with Kylo only to part ways later and not actually stick around to be a Knight of Ren.
