Lt. Uhura

Oops, I was working on a post to respond to two different posts, and then decided on just one, and deleted some of the wrong text in the box.
It's fixed now.

I never heard that one. I always assumed Roddenberry was casting about (pre-Internet era) for an Asian-sounding name, and he literally closed his eyes and stuck a pin in a map. GR should have asked George Takei or or Kellam de Forest for common Japanese surnames.

When the show was dubbed for broadcast in Japan, Sulu's name was changed to Kato. And apparently they made up their own stories, and Kato was the boss.

Can you say, "fan myth?"
It didn't happen.

Shatner's version of the joke in his 1986 SNL guest host monologue was that in Japan, the series had been retitled "Sulu, Master of Navigation."

It . . . was . . . a . . . joke.

In Japanese, the title of the series was "21 Seiki Uchuu Daisaksen" which, I believe, translates to "21st Century Space Operation." They moved the time frame down to the 21st Century from the nebulous 22nd-23rd century timeframe in play when TOS was in production. Captain "Kaaku" remained boss of the ship.

We're currently in summer reruns watching the episodes where they went to Japan. If you can get past Cosby, it's an amazing show. Sometimes.

Actually, it ranges from Man from U.N.C.L.E. quality to Danger Man. But the good episodes are worth it. Culp is brilliant.

Agreed. And frankly, if you can get past Gene Roddenberry, you can get past Bill Cosby.

Ummm. What? You don’t have to look at Roddenberry when you watch Star Trek.

It depends on what you find objectionable, doesn't it?
Do you find the Shows Bill Cosby created to be objectionable, or his actions toward women?

If you can separate one from the other for Roddenberry, why not Cosby?

Because, I imagine, when you watch I Spy you have to look at and hear Bill Cosby for 51 minutes. You only have to see Gene Roddenberry's name on screen for a few seconds. So each episode isn't an hour long reminder.

I personally have no problem watching I Spy, Star Trek, Fat Albert, Tales of the Gold Monkey or Star Trek The Motion Picture.

Yep.

And I listen to the Rolling Stones, and the Who and enjoy the works of a lot of people who weren't perfect. As a matter of fact, I don't even research if the people involved were perfect before I decide to like something or not.

If you've watched "Where No Man Has Gone Before" or "Forbidden Planet" or "The Enemy Within" you know that human beings are not perfect.

Where would we be if we can only appreciate the works if perfect people?

The Kato name change I can believe, as that's just a simple matter of dubbing. I have a feeling that the "Sulu was the boss" part is just an urban myth that arose from William Shatner's opening monologue on SNL when he joked that in Japan Star Trek was called "Sulu, Master of Navigation."

I can't see that there would ever be enough footage of Sulu in TOS for them to make it look like he's the one calling the shots. And what would they do with the 26 episodes that George Takei isn't in? That's a full third of the show.

Did that run in the sixties? I don't think we got it in Finland.

Timo Saloniemi, a case in point

"Captain's Masculine Log! I am off ship on an honorable mission! Ensign Kirk is in charge where I expect him to fail miserably!"

Now you're shifting the goal posts, as if anyone who did anything wrong are all somehow equivalent.

And the WORK is easier to separate from its maker when said maker is not performing it in front of you. The moment Cosby hands a woman a drink in any show now the suspension of disbelief is wrecked and you're faced with Cosby, not his character. Roddenberry was one person amongst 50–100 that made a given episode of Star Trek.

Look, I'm not the one who moved the goal posts in the first place.
The prosecution had to practically erase the statutes of limitations, and violate court procedures and confidentialities to obtain a conviction. And it was because the Prosecutor
acted unethically, the conviction was overturned.

For thousands of years, offering a woman a drink might be questionable, but it was acceptable.
Now, the goal posts say it's not. It's a sterilizable offense!

Face it: Cosby and Roddenberry both took advantage of women with drugs & alcohol.
Either you separate that fact from watching the show, or you don't.

There is a scene in an episode we saw recently where Cosby slips a mickey in a (man's) drink and it was all kinds of uncomfortable.

What's so upsetting is he was doing this stuff as early as 1965.

I can usually forget the fact during the watching of the show. God help us if it turns out Robert Culp was terrible!
