Unfortunately, it’s the woke stupidity that ST as a whole is beginning to get a reputation for and it’s lazy. Why not make the current Chief an Asian person with a backstory . Maybe he mentors Kyle who’s not the Chief yet?? Maybe he gives his life near the end of the series to save future Chief Kyle and makes the Kyle character richer overall as he gets some more backstory and character development too. It’s a missed opportunity to actually EXPAND the universe rather than retcon it. What’s next? Capt Kirk is a Muslim woman with gender identity issues?
Idk if I’d say there’s a lot people that want Kyle back. He’s pretty one dimensional. It’s unnecessary woke garbage. Just make a new character - why create the confusion unless it’s an issue you want to address later somehow. Not sure what that would look like though...
Maybe he could get an experimental medical treatment and it permanently alters his DNA?
Thought it was supposed to be a prequel. Never heard of it being a retcon until this Kyle issue.

He's the minor-est or minor characters that no one gave two shits about until they cast an Asian guy to play the current iteration and try-hard sleepers made him a pointless additional front in a culture war no one should give a fuck about, all so they can carry on their bigoted anti-woke parade which is thinly veiled commentary for "how dare you recast a white man with someone... other." You can be fine with casting an Asian person in another role, but ask yourself why making a barely there character Asian bothers you so much that you go right for the lazy and tired cries of wokeness.

I've got no problem with a minor TOS character's "Name" being attached to another actor 50-some years later, no matter his Race.
I'm going to completely change the subject for a moment to give Kyle some praise.
I've been a bit worried that SNW could end up making Discovery's mistake of giving recurring extras and minor characters so much screentime that we're left confused and frustrated when they never develop into proper roles, but I'm pretty happy with what they've been doing with Kyle so far. We always get just enough of him to build his legend over time without making me feel like he's getting shortchanged. He's definitely in my top 5 Star Trek Kyles right now.
