Lt.Kyle

That he’s Asian struck me as a lot less notable than that he was on Degrassi. I knew I knew him from somewhere!

Although not actually named onscreen, so "not canon" (yet), the character of Pike's redheaded Yeoman Colt in "The Cage" (originally played by Laurel Goodwin) was featured and credited in a Season Two episode of "Star Trek: Discovery", "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2". (Non-speaking in Part 1.) This Colt (played by Nicole Dickinson) was shown to be an alien. With black hair.

His last name's Kyle, but he's not the Lt. Kyle we know. Kirk just preferred having a Kyle as transporter chief so he scoured potential recruits until he found one.

"I'd still like a Kyle there, if possible."

"None available, Admiral."

"I'm afraid you're going to have to double as Transporter Chief."

Well, there was character who was called "Colt" in the credits. That's about all that can be said.

I think this is likely just an Easter-egg that got missed during production:
One of the writers did their research, put the name "Kyle" to the transporter guy. Then it comes time for casting, and in the script it only says "male", and being progressive they don't cast every role with white guys and instead gave it to an Asian guy. It's a very minor thing, no problem for me.

The same thing happened with the Klingon "D7" ship in DIS season 1, where the cgi guys clearly missed that it was a reference to an existing design and just put a random Klingon ship there.

Put it on the pile with the rest of continuity errors and move on.

THIS ONE really annoyed me though. Cole was not a minor character. If it was a one-time mistake - fine. Move on. If they'll double down on it though it would clearly put this show into the "reboot" category, instead of "visually updated prequel" which is the official stance.

There is only one person called Colt in the entire universe………? Okay….

It might be neat if one of the bizarre transformations that regularly strike our Trek characters actually stuck. They could get some interesting storylines out of that being the same Colt, if they wanted.

When Discovery came along in 2017, I saw that as a reboot. TOS Spock have a sister? The Klingon D7 is brand new in season 2 when ENT had one 100 years earlier?? No smooth-headed Klingons? Atmospheric forcefields in the shuttlebay when the TOS one had to decompress?

Nowadays I give far fewer fucks, I see they want things to seem futuristic from our perspective and it's not only set and ship design but characters and attitudes that have changed. Pike has a lot of women on his bridge now and he's comfortable with it. I highly doubt the SNW Jim Kirk will seduce any teenagers like his predecessor did. And the way SNW isnt even visually consistent with Disco S2 or Short Treks has kinda solidified it for me that it's all just adaptation. Like new versions of Sherlock Holmes, Batman/Superman/whoever, Poirot or anything else.

It sucks for the ultranerd who likes to compare ship sizes and analyse deck plans (and I love those things!), since all that is open to interpretation now. Something like TOS comes after SNW. Something like TNG, Picard and eventually Discovery comes after all that. But exact details? Concrete timelines you can map out with specific branch points? Bridge deck layouts, uniform exactitudes and warp core specifications? Nope. Pike's gold uniform in SNW is likely meant to be the same thing they wear in TOS which is meant to be the same thing they wear in ST'09. Kyle can be Asian, British or anything. Colt as an alien? In the SNW version of Trek, sure. In TAS Le-Matya is a green cat. In Disco it's a giant red crab/spider thing. They're both "a dangerous beast on Vulcan" and that's as far as it goes.
