Lower Expectations, says Discovery Writer.

Well... *I* love it, but surely if someone hated it they would not think it the best thing on television right now?

Yes, you are right that they would, because people tend to place personal preferences over objectivity. GOT has received 110 Emmy Award nominations with 38 wins and yet people who don't like it still claim it's only a T&A show!

I don't like it but that's only because I think it's dull. I'm also not a fan of the other big thing right now - The Walking Dead. Don't get me wrong. I can tell the quality of acting, locations, and it looks great. Didn't stop me channel hopping and looking for something else when I did decide to give the first series another try.

Oh certainly. I can relate to that. For instance I'm not a fan of Luis Buñuel's films and don't watch them but I recognize their artistic quality. And the opposite, I enjoy very much '50s/'60s sci-fi b-films even though [I admit that] most are very bad and silly.

I saw a couple of episodes of the relationship drama Brothers and Sisters. I thought it was well crafted. Good acting, good writing but I am just not into relationship dramas so I bailed out after about the third episode. That does not mean it wasn't a good show, it just means I didn't like the subject matter. There are several episodes of Star Trek that I will admit are good for what they are but they just aren't the sort of thing I enjoy watching. The Inner Light for example. I'm just not into dream episodes and characters living other people's lives. The Thaw is another (it's good, I just wish it had been about someone's 'real' fear instead of 'fear' in general' but that's just my personal nitpick.)

Objectivity in art criticism isn't a very useful exercise. Just because something wins awards doesn't mean it's necessarily "good." Not saying GoT isn't a good show, because it is, but the fact that it wins awards doesn't mean people can say "Ha! Checkmate, haters."

Same here. GoT obviously has some quality to the work as does The Walking Dead. I just don't care for either show's premise or characters. Doesn't mean I think it's all T&A or that that's my main objection.

Well said. I agree with this point because there is a lot of award winning stuff out there that I don't enjoy.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. If I say I don't like Ludwig van Beethoven's music that's a matter of personal preference that can be respected. If I say Beethoven's music is awful and amateurish I'm gonna be laughed out of any serious conversation.
I think you're equating the so-called "Western Canon" with Quality. Most people agree Beethoven was a brilliant composer, sure. That doesn't mean that there exists an objective, undeniable essence of Quality or Goodness. Because who decides what that means? Human beings who have opinions and preferences. And quite often, canonization is performed by old white men and excludes artistic contributions from minority cultures. It's often just a prop for the dominant culture, not a supposedly objective assessment of cultural contributions. I think that's largely a myth.

I'm not saying that's what you are doing, or that people like Beethoven and Mozart are not of high quality (I thoroughly adore those composers myself), I'm just saying that we shouldn't confuse consensus with objectivity or canonization with quality.

EDIT: Quality means whatever you want it to mean.

Or award winning shows with being above criticism or reproach. The idea that because a show, any show, has several awards means that I must accept it a quality entertainment is an opinion that I will disagree on.

GoT may be a good show with good writing. That doesn't automatically mean that all other TV shows should attempt to replicate the "formula" to create their new show. Which is why I don't agree that Discovery should be like GoT in space. Save that for the Dune TV series or something.
