Well... *I* love it, but surely if someone hated it they would not think it the best thing on television right now?Love it or hate it Game of Thrones is the best thing on television right now.

Yes, you are right that they would, because people tend to place personal preferences over objectivity. GOT has received 110 Emmy Award nominations with 38 wins and yet people who don't like it still claim it's only a T&A show!
I don't like it but that's only because I think it's dull. I'm also not a fan of the other big thing right now - The Walking Dead. Don't get me wrong. I can tell the quality of acting, locations, and it looks great. Didn't stop me channel hopping and looking for something else when I did decide to give the first series another try.

Objectivity in art criticism isn't a very useful exercise. Just because something wins awards doesn't mean it's necessarily "good." Not saying GoT isn't a good show, because it is, but the fact that it wins awards doesn't mean people can say "Ha! Checkmate, haters."Yes, you are right that they would, because people tend to place personal preferences over objectivity. Well said. I agree with this point because there is a lot of award winning stuff out there that I don't enjoy.Objectivity in art criticism isn't a very useful exercise. I think you're equating the so-called "Western Canon" with Quality. Most people agree Beethoven was a brilliant composer, sure. That doesn't mean that there exists an objective, undeniable essence of Quality or Goodness. Because who decides what that means? Human beings who have opinions and preferences. And quite often, canonization is performed by old white men and excludes artistic contributions from minority cultures. It's often just a prop for the dominant culture, not a supposedly objective assessment of cultural contributions. I think that's largely a myth.I'm not sure I understand what you mean. If I say I don't like Ludwig van Beethoven's music that's a matter of personal preference that can be respected. If I say Beethoven's music is awful and amateurish I'm gonna be laughed out of any serious conversation.
Now there's a show I would call out of work to binge watch.Save that for the Dune TV series or something.
