Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

I am willing to bet some latinum that the next plot will be:

* Mariner refuses to believe Boilmer has a girlfriend
* Horribly embarrasses her and almost ruins the relationship
* Apologies and tries to make amends.
* Boimler and she break up for entirely unrelated reasons.

Anyone want to take this bet?

Not you, Quark!
The first and second thing were all but explicitly shown in the trailer, and the third part is implied by the second.
So really it's just a question of whether Mariner is right to have whatever suspicions about the girlfriend.

Yes, I know TrekYards, but it’s also an interview with the show's creator so...

Edit: Though maybe this should have been better to post in the ship thread, eh.
This guy knows his Trek. It’s a shame he’s not working on Discovery or Picard.

I could go for better fan service in Discovery and Picard.
honestly, the brought back f***ing Icheb of all unnecessary characters. how much fan wank do we really need? As for the quality of it? "If Memory Serves" is nothing elese but high quality fan wank. It's sole purpose is to produce fangasms.

If anything, bot DSC and PIC need less fan service and more standing on their own feet

If they put Seven it it, showing what happened to Icheb adds to her story as well.
If they put Pike in it, showing what happened to Vina and the Talosians adds to his story as well.

you seriously think Icheb was brought back for fan service? He was used as part of Seven’s story. If anything his appearance and his treatment created anger in fans, not any kind of wank.

Look, I get the anger. Believe me, I never wanted to see that character again as well. And yes, he was fridged to develop Seven further. But, keeping the time in mind that had passed between the ending of VOY and the scene in question, that role could have easily been any ex Borg drone Seven encoutered in the years after Endgame. They chose Icheb instead, because, FFS, fan wank

The Icheb episode of Picard was absolutely dripping in fanservice, from a reference to Seven's cortical node to name-dropping Quark and the Breen.

Indeed, part of the reason the episode didn't work for me is it came across more as a random Trek fanfic story (complete with awkward insert of a character who didn't quite work) rather than a story tied to Picard.

I tend to agree. But TPTB have decided the sole purpose of their shows is to play off of nostalgia. If that is the case, I need them to do a better job of it.

Might want to watch a different show. This one is almost exclusively fan service.
Like DISCO and PIC it at least has interesting characters to make up for the fan service.

I'm more opposed to the ridiculous notion that a person producing Star Trek must be a fan.

If we're talking about the theoretical ideal writer for new TV Trek, they would have an encyclopedic knowledge of everything within Trek canon, and zero emotional attachment to any part of it.

Sure. That's a reasonable stance.

At least we live in a glorious time where there are 3 different Trek shows (not including the Short Treks specials) on "TV" with a fourth to come. It's nice that Trek is so viable that there can be a show designed for a niche/small audience.
Even in the Berman Era we only at most had 2 playing at one time.

I was entirely and particularly satisfied with Picard's visit to the Rikers'. Bittersweet and thoughtful. Granted, some of the other attempts at fanservice had a tendency to be somewhat unsubtle, but I'm okay with it. I'm a sucker for nostalgia and remembrances of simpler times.

That was the one that bothered me the most. Couldn’t simply have them move on from Starfleet and be happy, they had to drop a dead kid on it.

No one can have a happy life in Discovery/Picard.
