You probably mean the end of Volume 1... Alright, but I think Volume 2 returned to lameness pretty quickly, I got bored and haven´t finished it yet (but I know what will happen).
I'm not sure I'm not that big of a fan of Lovecraft's work. I assume they cut out the more problematic parts, but even without that it's so hopeless and all those tentacle monsters look the same after a while.
Yeah, Volume 2 kinda had this issue that the vast majority of it was basically the show spinning its wheels before getting to the series finale.
It's a world inspired by Lovecraft and other classic sci-fi from the perspective of African American protagonists. The problematic elements are not cut out, but neither are they celebrated.
Highly recommended.
More precisely the problematic parts are front and center with African American protagonists. I recommend Ruthanna Emyrs Innsmouth Legacy for a similar deconstruction. It's about a mermaid/Deep One protagonist persecuted by the government for her faith.

I actually am of the opinion the Cerritos is a place that Starfleet assigns all of its underperformers as well as extreme personalities versus outright court martialling them.

the opposite is true. it's the world of Lovecraft through the eyes of African-Americans. They rightfully put a big spotlight on the problematic parts and for some strange reason, this gives hope
I also recommend THE BALLAD OF BLACK TOM by Victor Lavalle, who is actually not that dissimilar from the main character of LC in real life.

the weirdest thing about Lovecrafts racism and antisemitism was: once he knew a person on a personal level, he really liked them. his wife was jewish, so were a couple of his closest colleagues and during his time in New York he became allegedly pretty friendly with a handful of POC.
Didn't stop him to be a racist asshole to anyone else, though.
Yes, this isn´t very typical racism, but I can kinda see to that mentality. When it came to his own wife he supposedly said she was "well assimilated" (subconscious resistance was futile), but he probably saw Jewish blood and the very proximity of black people as a threat Aryan strength and the high Anglo-Saxon culture. I am not aggressively racist person, but I can understand the logic. In the Lovecraft´s case it was bundle of abstract ideas he was reforging into fantastica. It could be isolated from the practical conduct when it came to friendly individuals.

I apologize if I sounded possibly malovelent. I am humanist first and foremost and I would never judge someone over ethnicity and I would definitely never hurt someone because of differences.
