Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

She may be a kind of prodigy, who excelled early in life but became quickly disillusioned by Starfleet protocol and bureaucracy at the expense of getting things done - hence the shovel incident. It tracks with what we've seen so far.

Queue the "Mary Sue" bullshit.
Yup, it's already happening.

True! If she's a Starfleet brat and got moved from ship to ship between mom and dad her whole life, she's most certainly had more on-the-job training than most top-of-the-class cadets. Most of that world would have been completely second nature to her, without the responsibility until she went into the Academy herself, which I'm sure was fully expected by everyone concerned.

Reminds me of Wesley's rise and fall in TNG, with his eventual disillusionment and cynicism jading his desire to continue on with what everyone believed would be a good career for him. Mariner was probably similar, to a degree, at least with respect to initial interest in the Fleet, only to have the idealistic notions of Glory, Duty, Honor, etc., quickly dashed from one bad mission.

And they wanna talk about a Mary Sue - Wesley was it! Constantly figuring out the problem of the week while the rest of the senior officers were either walking into bulkheads or drooling in cups.

I REALLY want to see Mariner's back-story leading up to the Cerritos. Must have some flashbacks soon!

I'm not sure who my favorite is yet. Might be Ransom once he gets more screen time. Seemed pretty cool with blowing the kids out an airlock.

Spore ghost Lorca. Corrupted by the spores fear of outsiders spore
Lorca seeks to consume human flesh to regain his form and spread spores throughout the
Federation. The spores on Omicron were one incursion.

I was also wondering about how Rutherford became a cyborg. Maybe we will learn details in later episodes? Possibly just a sentence somewhere about how it happened.

See, I took it as totally elective.

If it was elective, why would they give him one with a Vulcan ear, and so badly misaligned with a human personality? My thought is some kind of accident while he was either stationed on Vulcan or a Vulcan ship/installation.

I just thought it was an experimental tech and he jumped at the chance for the latest and greatest.

It is great to come here and see some adult conversation, I have been looking on Twitter the last few weeks and it is a cesspool of illogical comments. As for the show, have to say I am really digging it, I can really empathise with Boimler, the average guy that tries to do things by the book and put in the hardwork but somehow never comes out on top.

I also think there is Mariner is wonderful character, and the double act of these two really helps sell the show, well that and the tons and tons of references and call backs. It has become the highlight of the TV calendar week.
