Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

I notice the show is trying to build toward a romance between Tendi & Rutherford. In episode 2 she implied she would like to spend more time with Rutherford and he immediately put in a transfer to change his rotation. Now did he do this because he is genuinely in love with her or did she (accidentally or not) use her Orion pheromones to force him to do that?

Discuss.

Since the pheromones have not been mentioned it seems that is a nonissue for officers now.

And I've been figuring a romance since advertising began so yeah, that's a no surprise to me.

I hope the pheromones continue to be a nonissue. That was one aspect of Orions I didn't care for adding to them as a species. It makes them a little too much like the Falleen from Star Wars for my tastes. At least they didn't make them change to bright red when their aroused as well.

There is no reason for it to be a continued issue.

Orions in Starfleet have probably been to enough sexual harassment seminars to know that’d be considered rape. (Orville universe notwithstanding).

I noticed in the last episode the security chief is Bajoran. That has to be the first buff Bajoran we’ve ever seen. I wonder if he was on Bajor during DS9. Do most Bajoran just not have the body type to put on muscle or do they choose not to?

Would be interesting to learn Shaxs's backstory. At the moment, I'm assuming he grew up on Bajor during the Occupation, lost his eye fighting the Cardassians. Joined up with the Militia after the withdrawal, and now I'm assuming Bajor has joined the Federation, the Militia has been absorbed into Starfleet, and thus Shaxs is now a Starfleet security officer. That's my head canon anyway.

I thought so based on the promotional photos, but now after seeing the episode, I don't know. I'm just getting a friends vibe from them. Good friends, yes, but I'm not really sensing anything romantic from their interactions.

Or he just joined Starfleet during or after the occupation.

I suspect that Orions are required to take a similar “Oath of Celibacy” that Deltans do.

Anyway the Memory Alpha article cites other examples of Orion females who served among other races without being a problem. It's possible it only applies to some Orions, or that it's a voluntary thing they can choose to do, or that there are treatments they can take to suppress them to serve safely with aliens.

It'd be a nice touch if Tendi is shown taking a pheromone blocker (maybe while freshening up before a date), then we can just assume that they generally do that.

Eh. I don't need that deep of a dive in a cartoon.

Given the show went to the trouble of showing us freaking Ariolos, I think acknowledging the main twist from the one episode in all of Trekdom to actually center on Orions is not that deep of a dive.

By all means, don't go into detail, but a quick sight gag might make for a chuckle and understanding.
