Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

Excited for the return of Lower Decks this week. Hopefully it’s a good season and I got another year of P+ using the half off promotion. Wasn’t planning on paying the full price again.

This image from the first episode originally appeared in an e-mail from The NY Times discussing upcoming TV shows.

Well, damn....

As I had feared, Dutch Prime will not be getting season 4 of Lower Decks. The show has been set as 'leaving in 30 days' for a while. Normally, we'd be getting the new episodes a day after the US, so on friday. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Apparently, to celebrate Star Trek day or whatever, the Powers have decided to remove Lower Decks from Prime in Poland. There is now no way to legally watch LD or Discovery in Poland -- even though SkyShowtime is available here.

Why aren't we allowed to pay for these Star Trek series? Are they no longer fit for Polish people?

International media licensing "laws" have always been a strange duck. Never understood the old bullshit DVD region encoding. Sure, there were differences between NTSC, PAL, SECAM & ME-SECAM, but I don't think the DVD region encodings quite matched up, as there were 6 of those. BRD improved on it, thankfully, with only 3 region codes, but still a thick slice of P.I.T.A. bread for the consumer any way you cut it.

Damn.

Thank you, BTW. I wish I'd clicked this thread a few days ago. I'm in New Zealand and there's no sign of S4. Can't find anything related to the new season's broadcast one way or the other.

I think it's fair to assume NZ Prime is in the same boat as Dutch (and Polish) Prime.

Doesn't strike me as particularly encouraging for the show if Paramount can't be arsed with international anymore.

Most likely the show will end up on SkyShowtime here, which is Paramount's streaming service plus some other stuff. They have SNW, the older Star Trek movies, the Kelvin movies. So I've told anyway.

I couldn’t see season 4 on Prime UK last night, so it looks like we’ve been Paramount+’d too. Boo.
I’m not forking out for Sky or Now TV, so I guess that’s it for me for the time being.

At least when DISCO was pulled from Netflix at the 11th hour there was an announcement. Nothing has popped up on Trek-related news sites either, from what I can see.

That's that I guess.

Edit: Only seasons 1 & 2 are available now; S3 has now been removed, showing as "currently unavailable".

Am I the only one who thinks that if the Cerritos ever found itself in a "Conundrum" type situation, that Mariner and Ransom would be unable to keep their hands off each other, only occasionally coming up for air? Like Riker and Ro, only more so?

Paramount+ is a seriously fucked up service. What on Earth is going on with it?

I'm glad that in Vietnam, most of Trek is still sitting there on Netflix.

When it rolled out, it was definitely a mess. Latency and buffering all over the place. They obviously weren't prepared for the onslaught of subscribers that bogged down their infrastructure. The interface isn't all that great either, but not everyone can be a Netflix or a Prime.

I haven't noticed any issues recently on my end, but others do seem to be experiencing technical issues in places. In a way, they're victims of their own (perceived) success. The more Trek and other oribginal content they put out there, the more subscribers they will get to bog down their systems even more. They're always playing catch-up and never getting ahead of the curve, hence the persistent problems.

The one thing that bugs me right now is that Prodigy doesn't seem to be available for streaming. It doesn't have its own block in the Star Trek section and I haven't been able to search for it. Now, I get that it's currently in a weird state of limbo, neither fully canceled, nor fully alive, but why can't they just keep untouched what's already been done like all the other series? Was there some kind of special agreement with Nickelodeon about this that mandates its removal from P+? What did I miss there? It's times like that when I'm glad I have my Blu-Ray's. Sick to death of streaming "services" in general, if I'm honest.

It’s a shame because for the main part, the present batch of Star Trek shows are really good. Yet there are whole territories where swathes of the shows aren’t available. It’s really sad. It’s really weird.

P+ isn’t available in Vietnam. But I always said if they did, I would have been the first to sign up, just because as a fan, having all Trek on demand would be worth the cost.

I thought it would be the Star Trek channel, but at best it’s the ‘Most of Star Trek’ channel and at worst it’s ‘A Bit of Star Trek’ channel. Fuck it. It’s crap isn’t it?

Paramount+ did the HBO Max thing of cancelling and removing Prodigy in order to get a tax write-off. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be as strict as Max's erase for tax write-off policy is where they completely erase the show entirely and it can never see the light of day again. We are still getting the second half of Prodigy's first season released on physical media at the end of the month, and as noted above the show is being shopped around for someone else to pickup. Which according to the producers, they are "99% certain" the second season will air on another streaming service, though they haven't elaborated on that at all.

No plan survives first contact with economics.
