I was surprised not to see a thread on this. Forgive me if I missed it. Just watched episode one and was going kinda slow.....was about to get bored with it, then holy hell. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

I watched the premier last night as well. I never read the novel and had no idea what the series was about. At first it looked like a socio-political commentary, an examination of race relations with a possible alternate history element. I was expecting something similar to The Plot Against America. And then there was the car chase scene and everything completely changed after that. Looking forward to next week.

You guys have me intrigued. I was going to get HBO when the Snyder cut came out, maybe I should take a look now? (I have Netflix and Prime, going to drop one soon.)

Here's the weeks ahead trailer they showed after the first episode:

Funny how in that opening dream sequence we were barraged with elements from several works of genre literature including a considerably more book accurate version of Deja Thoris than what was presented in the recent big budget movie. Though not fully faithful to the novel as she still had on some clothes. ;)

Me, too! I really enjoyed the first episode--an honest look at America in the 50s, but with a sci-fi/horror slant. I'm looking forward to more.

As a side note, it also makes me really happy that a show called "Lovecraft Country" has a black family as the main characters. That racist fucker is probably spinning in his grave. :D

I was thinking about this too. The concept of racism in Science Fiction and Fantasy is brought up in the first few minutes of the series, but I am wondering where the story is actually going to go. The idea of Lovecraftian horror existing as much in the human characters as in the monsters is something that is literally seen in the first episode. I am actually reading Lovecraft's stories for the first time--a very few stories at a time--primarily because he was such a big influence on authors and fiction that have been such an influence on me.

Jordan Peele has certainly earned my respect with Us and Get Out, but I really don't know anything about Misha Green. I have looked a little bit at how the novel was received online, but I am not going to read it until after the show ends. It will be very interesting to see how the story actually addresses Lovecraft's legacy.

Has anyone here played Alan Wake? I couldn't picture an adaptation doing the flashlight and flares bit any better lol.

The second episode was intriguing, but it will be interesting to see what happens next. The villains have so far been very stereotypical and two dimensional but that may be the point.

Yeah I am still on board but episode 2 was a little calmer to me than 1.

Didn't like the musical choice for the opening bit. Pulled me all the way out.

Aside from that the episode was solid. They are advancing the story way faster than I expected.

I signed up for HBOMax, and watched the first episode.
It was really good, I was a little surprised just how grounded the majority of it was. I was expecting at least a few hints of the supernatural, but there weren't any until the monster attack, when everything went completely nuts.
I really like the characters, and the cast all gave great performances.

Me, too. I didn't think we would get there SO fast---it was damn exciting, though. I really loving this show.:bolian:

I looked at a description of the book. It is a series of connected short stories and it looks like the series is following this quite closely. HBO has been doing a great job with limited series this past year: Watchmen, The Plot Against America, and now this. I am really enjoying it, and find myself thinking about it throughout the week in anticipation of the next installment.

The story is really taking an interesting allegorical approach embedded in "real world" elements in examining racism in America--but without sacrificing the elements of suspense or fantasy. The Lovecraft influence is as much related to his racism as to his stories. I am wondering though if we are going to get a deeper philosophical element to this or if each chapter will be similar to what we have seen so far.

I am loving it. The first episode was fantastic.

I am watching the second episode now. The opening with the song and music from The Jeffersons was interesting.

I didn't like the second episode as much as the first one. It was a little confusing.

So the family legacy of Tic is that he is a descendant of that Titus Braithwaite dude. But did they also imply that he was the son of Titus and maybe immortal?

I Iiked the uncle george character. Hopefully he is not dead for good.
