Spoilers Lovecraft Country

I looked at a description of the book. It is a series of connected short stories

More Kolchak in some ways. I’m not familiar with the book—was thinking this might build as in True Detective’s first season. A little Children of the Corn setting...a rash of tornadoes as punishment for past crimes, people frozen as they stare into a blank sky...

Episode 3: Wasn't connected to the storyline of the first 2 episodes until the last few minutes, but that was a damn good haunted house story.

^ It sure was. The supernatural is going to find these characters wherever they go. I am REALLY enjoying this.

Well it's nowhere near Watchmen quality, but not much is. Still on the fence about whether it's really HBO quality or not.

I enjoyed the haunted house story and really liked getting some more of the characters beyond the main couple. Every episode has had a fantasy aspect of getting revenge on white supremacists so far. I'm wondering how long our characters can keep "winning".

I wouldn't say they exactly "won" in the first episode. They were all tortured and the uncle was killed. They escaped and survived. In the second episode, they definitely won--both against the murderous neighbors and the evil ghost. But then the blond-haired woman was back again to let them know they weren't really free from the family after all.

I think we will see uncle George again. Leti was also killed (around the same time as uncle) and was revived, as she reminded us in the last episode.

Probably. I cheated and checked IMDB. So either he shows up only in clips or flashbacks, or the character is actually going to be seen again. That makes me happy. Courtney B. Vance is all kinds of awesome. :bolian:

Episode 4: another good episode. The walking the plank scene was exciting, very Indiana Jones like.

It was a very interesting and exciting episode. Loved the Indiana Jones vibe. The <edited> indigenous person at the end was very interesting. Both in the sense that many cultures modern day gender - opinions are highly influenced by European colonizer values. Marlon James has spoken about modern day African opinions of sexuality being much different than in pre-colonial times, for example.

The ending was a total shocker for me. I can't wait to see Sunday's episode.

They need a real challenge.

I might have them go after a Confederate Ghost, who was married to a Native American woman who was herself also killed by Sherman —-but also by Buffalo Soldier ancestors of the heroes.

Then the idea of blood guilt gets interesting.

To get rid of the first ghost, a price has to be paid. One character might say it is unfair for the living to pay for the crimes of the dead, and then forget that is their raison d’etre.

That could start all kinds of discussions.

The transgender, two-spirit indigenous person at the end was very interesting.
I might have might terminology mixed up, but I don't think they would be transgender. A tansgender person is someone who has transitioned from one gender to the other, but she, they kept saying, but I'm not sure if that would be correct, appeared to have been born that way.

I really enjoyed the last couple episodes, the haunted house stuff in three was good, and four had a fun Indiana Jones vibe.

Yes, I was way off in my terminology--the word should have been hermaphrodite. I really apologize if I offended anyone--and I edited out all adjectives because I am not sure what is correct.

Whoa....that was...interesting, to say the least. I loved Ruby living her "other life" and then going back to who she was.

Everyone is living another life: the men at the drag club, Ruby/ Hillary, and Christina
wearing William (I assume he's been dead this whole time

Did the evil-sheriff-guy have a black man's torso? Was he someone the mad scientist experimented on? Eww.

James Van Pelt had a great story called “The Invisible Empire” in an anthology called “Children of Cthulhu” that would be perfect for this series.

I binged through the series so far over the last couple of days. I actually felt the Indiana Jones one was a bit of a misfire, tonally it felt a bit disconnected from the other ones if you were to take the series as a cohesive whole even given the series’ anthologyish approach. I didn't really know what to expect with this show so was a bit surprised when the more overt elements came on. I had the impression it was going to be more subdued. Wasn’t too surprised to see Jordan Peele’s name as I was getting a Get Out vibe at times.

They did a good job getting you invested enough in the first episode that the sheriff was nail-bitingly tense before they even dropped the other shoe. If anything the supernatural element when it came was less malevolent even if more visceral.

I’ve only had a chance to glance at them but this site has been putting together a “syllabus” to go with each episode focused on the black history side (no mention of Marilyn Manson in the track selections...) Now that I’ve watched it I can see where background material would be interesting to explore.

Is this going to be an ongoing series or a single season one? We are halfway through the 10 episodes of the season. Next week we will finally see the Korean girl Tic has been calling.

I have been trying to find out that very thing. So far, HBO hasn't said, but ratings & reviews have been really good, so I'm assuming, and hoping, that there will be a season 2.

It is based on a novel so I assumed it was a single season, but then again The Handmaid's Tale was based on a novel as well. I guess we'll see.
