Spoilers Lord of the Rings TV series

I don't think that's the actual opening of the show, I think it's just a video they made to announce the title.

The article specifically says "title sequence."

That said, I'm thrilled the series will be focused on the rings of power. That was something I was always very curious about and The Silmarillion didn't focus much time on. I hope this show focuses not just on how the Nine corrupted Men into the Nazgûl and how the Three failed to corrupt the fair Elves, but also what the Seven did to the Dwarves. Aside from heightening their greed for gold, mithril, and other riches, really know nothing about the Seven (other than one or two of them being destroyed by dragons).

I actually hoped they'd do a story completely unrelated to the movies. There is enough material in Silmarillion for 30 shows. Why rings again??
They don’t have the rights to do anything from the first age. Only the second and third.

family might not have allowed it. they're probably more open now with Christopher Tolkein's passing, but they've been swindled repeatedly in the past and I think for them there is still family legacy at stake.

just how personal Silmarillion is..

anyway I hope this works out. I like the idea of them exploring that period in time. there is a long period of time to work with.

Oh, OK then. I didn't read the article, I just watched the video after I saw it on the Amazon homepage when I went there for something else.

Well they probably wanted to stick to something related to the movies to draw in the non-hardcore fans, who are going to want to see something familiar from the movies/trilogy books. I love the movies, but I've never read anything more than the Hobbit, and Fellowship & Two Towers, so I'm a lot more interested in this story than I would be in something that was farther away from the movies.

The Second Age is probably the least fleshed out part of the story. So much was written about the First Age that the Second Age is left to the last chapter or so of the Simarillion and backstory bits of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

First age would have been utterly ridiculous and would also belong on the big screen with the giant battles. You could blow a billion dollars just on the special effects on that one.

I'm really looking forward to this hoping that having a big budget also means they have good stories to tell, just pouring everything into production values doesn't necessarily mean it'll be a good show.

Nerd Of The Rings has posted a video that clarifies a few things:

On first playing the title reveal video, I wasn’t really impressed by either the title or by Morfydd Clark’s rather sibilant narration. But it’s nice to know that it is she, and I guess that her Galadriel should be judged on its own merits.

i get the impression that a goal of the show will be to appeal to young and old alike rather than trying to ape Game Of Thrones. This will probably be a good thing - Tolkien’s world has plent of scope for dramatic heft without depending on salacious content.

I understand that it won't happen, but imagine if they could get Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellan, and the dude who played Elrond to reprise their roles in this series. Galadriel was definitely around and I know Elrond was born sometime in the Second Age (I'm not going to look it up.) Can't remember exactly when Olorin (Gandalf) and the rest of the Istari arrived in ME.
