Looking for TOS reused footage...

Bad Atom

Commodore
Commodore
I'm working on a video project and I'm trying to find as many instances of reused live-action footage from TOS as I can, such as:

Shots of the bridge and viewscreen
Sulu or Chekov looking back over their shoulder
Spock staring into his viewer

Stuff like that. If anyone can help me track down which episodes these shots are in (and specifically, where) it would be much appreciated.

Spock and his viewer might have been seen a lot, but were they reused footage in the sense of the Sulu/Chekov over the shoulder shot. Spock usually had lines when he was using the prop, I can't think of any carbon copy shots of him using it.

Anyhoo, Spock was using it again in "Yesterday's Enterprise" shortly after the ship is flung back in time and the interceptor is approaching them.

^You mean "Tomorrow is Yesterday." "Yesterday's Enterprise" is TNG.

But you're right, there's no reason to believe there were ever any recycled stock shots of Spock at his viewer (unless we include the animated series). Stock shots would be scenes without dialogue. Viewscreen angles of the sort mentioned in the initial post are the primary examples of live-action stock footage that I'm aware of. A few shots of crew members in the corridors reacting to PA announcements or flying around as the ship shakes may have been reused; I think there's one case where the same corridor shot is seen twice in the same episode, though I can't recall which one. Otherwise, I think we'd mostly be looking for insert shots -- close-ups of the chronometer, of hands operating consoles, maybe of the sickbay monitors. Though now that I think about it, I can't recall any such instances. Overwhelmingly, the reused stock shots in TOS were FX shots of the Enterprise and other ships, explosions in space, and the like.

A corridor scene in Corbomite Manuever is reused in Balance of Terror.

I couldn't find a lot of information on reused shots, so I dug through my DVDs and found plenty of material. The third season seems to have the most reused material, including some shots of Spock at his viewer. "The Tholian Web" in particular is full of stock bridge shots.

Anyway, I finished my video, so everyone can now see how much stock footage I found. :)

That was pretty cool. Of course, you could have simply used the majority of the bridge shots from TMP's V'Ger flyover sequence, but this was more entertaining. :)

I can't believe that all of those shots were reused as stock in more than one instance. I mean, there's no way that shot of Kirk walking in front of the rear-projected viewscreen at about 1:19 was ever reused; we never saw that rear-projected screen except in "Spock's Brain."

I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to do here. Is the premise that these are actual recycled clips, where the exact same frames of film were reused in two or more places, or just that these are insert sequences where several different clips from a particular actor's extended reaction shot were cut in at different points in a scene or episode? Because those are not the same thing at all.

^ I think he was originally looking for stock shots because they tend to not have dialog. When that didn't work, he just went through his DVDs and found shots without dialog.

A lot of those shots were certainly not reused.

Oh, good Lord. Its a joke. Maybe that's what Bad Atom was trying to accomplish here.:confused::confused::confused:

Jeez Me Christmas. Pull the stick out already, will ya?

Anyway, good job Bad Atom. You effort is appreciated by most of us.

^I don't understand your hostile reaction. I thought the original poster was asking about recycled footage specifically, and I was confused about how the video related to that search, so I asked for clarification. Kelso was able to answer my question in a polite and informative manner, and his answer makes sense to me, and I thank him. No need for any kind of hostility or confrontation.

One reused shot that comes to mind is the shot of Spock in command and Uhura and Leslie at Navigation and Helm, respectively, from the episode "The Naked Time:"

It was reused again in "The Man Trap" during Kirk's "Captain's Log" voice over:

GSchnitzer: What sources are those two images pulled from? The image from "The Naked Time" looks much better than the one from "The Man Trap".

Interesting that you noticed. I grabbed "The Naked Time" shot from my regular definition (but remastered) version of the First Season that came out last year--the one that came out on HD-DVD twin-pack (although I just grabbed the regular definition version).

I grabbed "The Man Trap" shot from the regular (not remastered) First Season DVD set that came out a couple of years ago.

So you can see that even without the benefit of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, the clean-up and color correction done on the remastered version results in some improvement in the picture.

Kelso and Green Shirt are correct - I was simply trying to find as much stock footage as I could for my video. I also used several non-reused shots where the characters were basically doing or saying nothing. It wasn't a research project or anything, 'twas all in good fun. :)

The shot of Scotty clinging to the "grate" in engineering (from "Tomorrow is Yesterday") was re-used in...someone help me out here...

The shot of Nurse Chapel fainting and dropping her tray (from "Spock's Brain") was re-used in "The Way to Eden".

I believe the overhead shot of Kirk in his command chair (from "The Enemy Within) was also re-used but I can't remember which episode it was in. More help, please.

Scotty clinging the the grilled wall (from "Tomorrow is Yesterday") was reused in "The Doomsday Machine."

Nurse Chapel fainting and dropping her tray (from "Spock's Brain") was re-used in "The Way to Eden."

Overhead high shot of Kirk in his command chair (from "The Galileo Seven," not "The Enemy Within") was re-used in "The Lights of Zetar."
