Raise hands. I will help you.

    It's quite easy to do.

First you will need a screen cap of the general. Once you got it on file, use a photo editing program, such as Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, to reduce it to the maximum size of 100x100.

Next you will need an image host. Check the reference links in the first post for suggestions. Register with your image host choice, set it up in "My Home" profile. You can take it from there.

OK, I just read through 12 pages of avatar info and have one question for you tech types:

I am a total neophyte when it comes to avatars, although I know I'd like one . If you see an image on a site like Trekpulse, for instance, are those 'free' pics for download, or do you have to get permission before downloading? And is it difficult?

Sorry for the stupid questions. :o

Ooh, that is a really good question.

I think the general rule is downloading an image is okay, but hot-linking is not. If someone wants credit for the image, they will usually watermark it or include some sort of logo. If the images are not for you to download, a lot of times that is explicitly spelled out on the site or there are a few Javascript tips that can discourage someone from right-clicking on an image. Try some of the pictures at wireimages.com or gettyimages.com to see what I mean.

I used to maintain a running list of where I get my screencaps from and then credit them on the userinfo page of my Livejournal. The problem is that 1) the more caps you have, the harder it is to keep track and 2) what happens when you take screencaps from a site like Trekpulse and they close?

I have a question now that my avatar is enabled: if I change it, will it be an "across the board" change (that is to say, all posts I've made will feature the new avatar), or will be just be shown on the posts I make after changing and my previous posts will have the older av on it?

    Many thanks!

It's an across the board change, so older posts will have the new avatar.

You have to have 100 posts before your pictures show up.

How do I make an avatar with good quality/defintion? I see most avatars with what I would call "high quality" definition, yet when I click on their "properties", the file sizes are always under the 20Kb limit. I have a large, cropped picture, which I resize to 120x120, and save in the highest quality jpg format (using Roxio Photosuite), and it is fuzzy (as can be seen). Am I doing something wrong? How do folks get such nice looking images?

Use a freeware software called Easy Thumbnails. Is real easy to use and you can adjust the quality. It can resize it to 20kb or less and still have it look good and not fuzzy.
