Long delayed Red Sonja movie being released in August.

Bottom line, I just don't see the point of doing a humorless and drab swords-and-sorcery flick - and, despite a CG beastie here or there, this preview sure looks like that.
It looked pretty standard fantasy fare to me. Trailers are not something I put much stock in terms of tone. So, if it's "drab" in a trailer I don't think that's reflective of the actual film.

But, I'll also be reserving judgement until I see the actual film.

Hey, I've got nothing against padded costumes, or even fake muscle prosthetics. If I had to choose between an actor of average build but with a demigod's charisma, who had to wear artificial muscles to appear buff, and a professional bodybuilder with enormous (possibly steroid-enhanced) muscles but no screen presence, I'll take the former any day. Not everyone can be a Chris Hemsworth in Thor or a Dolph Lundgren in Masters of the Universe. (Though when there are such actors, by all means use them, surely.)
I don't even see where fake muscles are necessary, as long as it looks believable that they could swing a sword in a fantasy or historical movie, and handle themselves in a fight that all I need.

Yup.

Looks pretty bad. It's a shame, I greatly enjoyed the six novels published by Ace back in the 80s.

This doesn't seem to resemble those in the slightest.

They aren't the source material. Roy Thomas wrote the 1970s Conan comics based on the 1930s pulp stories by Robert E. Howard. He took Red Sonya from a historical pulp fiction story by REH, renamed her, dropped her in Conan, then she got her own series. Smith and Tierney wrote their six novels based on the comics. The comics of the last few years are based on the old Marvel comics. A lot of them don't need to exist, but Gail Simone's are good, and she's got a Red Sonja novel out now too.

I doubt there will ever be a good Red Sonja movie. There hasn't been what I'd consider a good Conan movie, either. Forget the comics and go back to Howard's stories.

What I'd be interested to know: What qualifies as a good Red Sonja or Conan - movie? What heavy lifting does the movie have to do?

I knew that, but my point was that those novels were entertaining and closer to the source material than what this reboot appears to be. To be fair, I'll probably give it a watch, but I'm not expecting much.

To see your enemies driven before you and hear the lamentations of their women.
That's not really helping.

I mean - honestly: What would one want in a Red Sonja Movie, if @Steve Roby says, that he'll doubt, that there will ever be a good one? What does she need to do? Like I said, from the trailer only one shot made me go "Naaah, not really" - and that was her backflip. The rest was okay.

I’d like some evidence that the people who make Conan or Red Sonja movies have read some Robert E. Howard. Conan wears clothes. He doesn’t have a special favourite sword or a nemesis or a long-festering need for revenge. He doesn’t do fancy sword fighting techniques and he’s not a weightlifter with a perfect physique. He’s an adventurer, a mercenary, a thief, a pirate, a soldier, whatever he needs to be to make a few coins to keep himself in wine and women between jobs. He’s smarter and stronger than a lot of the people around him. He’s not a chosen one and he’s not on a hero’s journey, and though he eventually ends up being a king, it’s not a grand destiny. And a lot of the stories about him are fun. Some are pretty much horror stories, some don’t need any supernatural or fantasy elements. And he doesn’t need yet another origin story, especially with a nemesis taken from an entirely separate Robert E. Howard series of stories.

Sonja borrows elements of Howard characters like Red Sonya of Rogatino, who appeared in exactly one historical fiction story set in the 16th century. She’s a fiery redhead who’s good in a fight and there’s not a lot more there. Roy Thomas essentially created her in the Conan comics, and she’s been recreated every few years. Was she raped by mercenaries then given fighting powers by a demon under the condition that she couldn’t have sex with any man who didn’t beat her in battle? That’s kind of creepy and removes a lot of her agency. Is she the reincarnation of that Red Sonja? Is she just a woman who can fight, have adventures, and shag any man or woman she wants? Her sex life always seems to be one of the first things the writers think about when they reinvent her, especially when they have her in the metal bikini. Even Marvel didn’t always have her dressed like that. But it too often seems that she’s defined by her appearance and not a lot more.

And what world does Sonja live in? She’s gradually been pulled away from the Hyborian World of Conan, and the current publisher keeps putting her in other eras and crossovers with all of its other characters. There isn’t much of a solid core to the character, other than being a red haired fighter with an impractical sense of style where armor is concerned. You can talk about going back to the core of a given superhero but I doubt anyone would want to retain some of the 1970s elements now. I’m curious about Gail Simone’s new novel, because that might provide some kind of focal point to define who the character is, but someone else could come along and overwrite that again. Someone making a movie has almost too much freedom, because there’s not a lot of consistency to the character, and all the average person knows about is the red hair and the bikini.

It was meant to be funny not helpful. :p

I saw the humor in it.

;)
Yeah, it was funny. Problem is: If I read "oh, I doubt, we'll ever get a good Red Sonja / Conan - Movie", stupid, old me, asks "Okay, what qualifies as a good Red Sonja Movie. And why is this movie not one of those? And why - apparently - is the Red Sonja Movie with Brigitte Nielsson and Arnold Schwarzenegger not a good Red Sonja Movie?" I mean, I don't know much about the character, so all *I* can do, is to watch the trailer and later on - maybe - the movie. So - I watched the trailer of this movie and - like I said - thought "Except for that weird looking backflip-sequence, where one clearly sees, that there is a lot of CGI involved, that trailer looks quite decent." But here I read, that some people say, the trailer would be bad and the movie probably, too - and I can't help but ask "Why?"

Sure, lot of taste is involved, but there must be at least some reason to say "that trailer looks bad" or "the movie will be bad".

My thinking it looks isn't really that it looks like a bad Red Sonja movie specifically, it just looks like a cheap, cheesy, generic fantasy movie.

If you look at everyone who made the movie, it was never going to be good. The only reason this is getting a little more attention than other DTV titles is the name.

Did you know Deathstalker got a remake? I assume that's going DTV as well.

Along with Highlander, maybe we'll get remakes to Krull, Dragonslayer and Beastmaster.
