Out of all the ideas for making a spinoff, they chose the kids at Clara's school? The ones that received all that screen time in the universally loathed episodes The Custodian and Forest of the Night?

I thought it was a joke when I first heard about it. What do you think they're trying to do, recapture the awesomeness of SJA? It's funny because they could have tried for a Paternoster Gang spinoff. That would have drawn much more excitement.
 
They might have recaptured some of the SJA magic if they had someone like, say, Clara in the show. Sarah Jane was the most recognizable and probably most popular companion from classic Who.

Doing this in the place Clara worked doesn't do anything for me. If they hadn't sent Clara off, they could have at least had her appear here and there, if not star in it.

I too would have liked to see the Paternoster (aka Scooby) Gang, maybe a mini-series.
 
Miniseries, definitely. Those guys are good in small doses. Wouldn't want to get fatigued, like what happened with River.

Just...in general. I like what it grew into, especially towards the end of Season 2 and Children of Earth, but I also really enjoyed Miracle Day. Although my two favorite Miracle Day characters ended up dying, so I could be okay with it being ignored.
 
You know we could wait and see what Class is like...
I'd agree the premise doesn't necessarily reach out and grab you by the throat, but plenty of top shows have had low key beginnings and plenty of failures were teh next big thing. It's being written by someone who understands the YA market, which could be its greatest strength, and frankly we don't know much more about it beyond that so its hard to judge.

As for Torchwood and SJA...
TW Series 1: Utter tosh with the odd spark of greatness. Thought it was serious adult drama.
TW Series 2 Utter tosh with the odd spark of greatness which now understood it was utter tosh and consequently was far more enjoyable.
Children of Earth: An absolute classic.
Miracle Day: A mess that had a great central idea and some great moments but which was too much a re-tread of COE, only stretched to almost twice the run time with a concept that just wasn't quite as good.
The Sarah Jane Adventures: Fab.

I think that it started off as a completely non-DW related series that had a vague DW connection bolted on to it. So assuming that this is something that's being aimed at Fans first is a mistake.

What's funny is that it won't get a TV Broadcast in the UK but BBC America will by Hyping it up as their big Autumn show because they won't have a series of DW to air.

Yeah. My guess is that this was a Patrick Ness TV series that got attached to the Doctor Who brand to the mutual benefit of both (what Doctor Who gets is something that will air in 2016 to distract from the lack of an actual series). Certainly I'm looking forward to it more for Ness, who's a great YA writer, than because it's got anything to do with DW.

It will, actually. All long-form BBC Three content going forward is also going to air on BBC One or BBC Two, albeit sometimes in daytime or late-night slots. Ness has said on Twitter that Class will be on BBC One.
 
I'm not enthusiastic about Class at all, and I know few people who are.

It does seem rather odd that, after years of building up the foundations of what seemed pretty blatantly to be a Paternoster Gang spin-off, we should instead be presented with a series about Coal Hill Secondary School (Actually, shouldn't it be Coal Hill Free School or Coal Hill Academy now?) instead.

Obviously The Sarah Jane Adventures can't come back because Elizabeth Sladen is irreplaceable. Her death (which I can't really believe happened five years ago) can't really be mitigated. Actually, having seen some of the ideas for what could have been in the fifth series, I'm not sure I would have wanted it to go on.

Torchwood, likewise, is unsalvageable after Miracle Day. There was simply no way to fit that story into Whoniverse continuity and the cliffhanger is one I'm not sure anyone wants to see explored. The only way that show can be revived is if the fourth series is somehow retconned (He He!), or even just declared non-canonical by the BBC and ignored by all future instalments in the franchise - which would be consistent with what has already happened so far.
 
The longer this takes to get off the ground, the less realistically these kids are still ten years old.

Are we literally talking about the same actors from the forest, which feels like nearly 3 years ago? (Late october 2014)

Boobs, impressive shoulders, shitty little mustaches and 5 inches of height could appear on any of these kids before the camera starts rolling.

It makes no sense without Clara. She's the one at that school with the experience dealing with aliens, monsters, and creepy things. Well, her and Danny Pink. But they're both dead. So who's left...Courtney Woods? It' s still a horrible premise either way.

They'll come up with some way to make it viable but I have no interest in watching it. Having Jenna Coleman there as an occasional guest star would've had me tune in for the pilot, but otherwise...no chance. Give me some Poternaster Gang specials every so often instead.
 
Jacqueline Hill (Barbara) died years ago. But it would be nice for Ian to make one last Who appearance. It should have been done for the 50th (although he did show up in disguise in "Adventure in Space and Time" and, lets be real, he's not going to be around terribly much longer
