Live Long and Prosper

I noticed that in the episode SAVAGE CURTAIN, Surak - the father of all that Vulcans hold near & dear - was a switch-hitter, offering up the Vulcan Salute both ways. So, this confusion seems to have cropped up from the very beginning ...

Right Hand, "Live Long and Prosper"
Left Hand, "Prosper and Live Long"?

Or,
Left Hand, "repsorP dna eviL gnoL"?

:vulcan:

Surely Mr Spock made the sign with his thumb out ( 2 finger 2 fingers 1 thumb ) ??? Today i watched an old episode of NCIS where DiNozzo ( the series film expert) made the sign with his thumb in ( 2 fingers 3 fingers(or2+thumb) I hope im not wrong in thumb out otherwise im going to watch Land Before Time the whole series of films over and over forever and never watch Trek again

I watched the news this morning and not one person even attempted the sign. I think you should never watch Trek again, too. Buh bye.

HIjol. Sir........................

'Frakes, Sir...if you are heading for 10 Forward, I believe the Ladies of Stellar Cartography are giving a lecture. "ErosRhyme in the Stars" I believe is the title. We could share our poetry!

You are the poet, HIjol - it is you they come to read. I just rhyme "June" with "Spoon," in support of The Cause. You know, now that I reflect on this a bit, "Live Long & Prosper" seems like there should be more to it, doesn't it? Like it's part of a litany, or something. Like, "Live Long & Prosper, as these are the days worth living for ..." and so on.

What if Vulcans have been arguing for the last 1900 years about which way is the "correct way" to do the Vulcan Salute? We learn in ENT that most of Surak's original teachings were lost for a time, this detail could have been forgotten over the years.

The image of Surak created by the Excalbians must have been based on historical accounts of him and Spock's interpretation of him. If there were any discrepancies in the way he did the salute, it makes sense that he could be depicted as using both.
