Gah, I'm not sure what to make of that. I guess some of that could just be done for the cutesy promo but....
Yea. I mean I don't expect fourth wall breaking in the actual show and use of the comic panels and things... but I really hope those fight scenes were just done quickly and on the fly because they looked awful and I don't want the quality of that to be what's in the actual show.
According to io9, this isn't the full trailer, but a teaser. I expect the full trailer will give some idea of the plot and have actual scenes from the show, while this is more just conveying character, tone, and attitude, and giving us a glimpse of the ship at last.
Right now I think people are skeptical of this show so getting cute may not be the best idea at this point.

There are always "people" who are reflexively skeptical of any and every new show, a tiny minority of kneejerk complainers who make a disproportionate amount of noise. Any sensible filmmakers and distributors would've learned long ago to ignore them.
I suppose maybe I've projected these "people" but it seemed there has been a decent amount of skepticism about this show and not just from the fringe. If this is garnering positive buzz then more power to them.
Well, the people who comment on the internet are a small fraction of the actual viewing audience, and so are the people who pay attention to advance buzz. The whole reason teasers and trailers exist is to get the attention of people who haven't already been following the advance news.
I honestly have no idea what to make of that teaser. The transitions are clever and well-executed, but unless they're used sparingly and mixed up a lot, I hope they're not in the show. And somehow I find everything feels a bit too slow to properly sell it. That's the thing with live-action, real people just cannot move like cartoons and when they try it often comes off slow and awkward, even if they are talented actors.
I thought they looked badly choreographed and the acting was iffy as well. I hope it's a rushed job, specifically for the trailer.
John Cho always seems to be channelling Sam the Eagle from the Muppet Show. He's never going to be the Spike from the anime. He's parallel universe Spike. Maybe I'm wrong - just have to wait a month to see.
Why should he be? If you want the anime, you've already got it. The point of doing a new version of something is to do a new version. A slavish copy would be pointless.
For that matter, I never thought Steve Blum in the English dub sounded anything like Kōichi Yamadera's performance in the original. Blum's Spike is more intense, less mellow. The character comes off rather differently as a result. So there are already two distinct interpretations of "Spike from the anime" depending on which language you see it in. Nothing wrong, then, with adding a third actor's interpretation. That's what actors do. They bring their own interpretations to a role rather than exactly copying one another. That's what makes it interesting.
