When they began the series, the decision to go 16:9 was very late in the day with all filming on the pilot shot intending to continue with 4:3. So what we see is cropped and framed very close to the actors in some shots. Clearly the greenlight to finally bring Star Trek to widescreen was given just after the feature-length opener was completed.
