You know who could have stuck to spinach this time out? Quinto. Spock's porked up quite a bit.

I don't know, call me suspicious, but I wonder if that wasn't something they made him do in order to look less attractive by comparison. Still, if that's the case it didn't work. He didn't look his best, but no one took the screen away from him to me.

And before someone asks, my mind goes to this thought because they (producers and such) control what the actors look like. Ever heard about actresses being told to lose weight for a role? Zachary is not naturally that big and hefty, and the producers and such aren't blind. I think they knew what they were doing.

And herein lies the issue, Carcazoid. They weren't at a beach. It was a professional environment and she didn't give him permission to look. So, he sneaked a peak--Okay. Kirk is Kirk, but the way that scene happened was just weird. I mean, for someone changing out of one outfit into another, she sure was posing for him (and the male audience that's watching).

Now, I don't have a problem with nudity or partial nudity (and in that environment it is partial nudity--would she look like that at desk job? No), but if it's going to be that overtly gratuitous, then people shouldn't get huffy if other people notice and call it pathetic.

Kirk turned around to speak to her, and saw her in her underwear. He had the sense to look abashed. It was a cute scene, nothing more. That it's been made into the issue it has is absurd.

He didn't look abashed to me, and why turn around to speak? He could hear her when he was turned around, so what would make him think she wouldn't be able to hear him if he stayed turned around.

Absurd is your view. Feel free to have it, and I'll feel free to see that overtly gratuitous scene as sad hackery.

This type of scene not only degrades women, but sets an unrealistic ideal for every woman to attempt to obtain. There are studies that exposure to the unhealthy images causes long-term effects on the overall health of the body image of women.

So being slim, fit and obviously careful about your health degrades women? In that case my wife and I have been degrading the entire human race the last 14 years!!

This isn't about physical health in these media images. For instance, Barbie, if a person, would be sterile, wouldn't be able to walk on two legs, and anorexic. It's also proven that those that play with Barbies will become aware of their own bodies as unattractive. This is about an unhealthy image and the extremes people drive themselves to attain what we see is a "healthy image." It's a mirage. Thin is not healthy. Healthy is eating a balanced diet in moderation and exercising regularly. How many times have we seen "healthy (re: thin)" people drinking excessive amounts of beer or smoking? That's not healthy.

It's a crash diet...for five months?!?! You made it worse and, what's more, you made it known in an argument that is supposed to refute me? She's trying to fit that perfect ideal. Do you think a soldier would live on spinach for five months? Are they in fighting shape? This culture is nuts!

Why is it different than 3,000 years ago, as some have suggested is a time frame we have been doing this? Because the standard of beauty is getting smaller while the average woman is getting bigger. This is a recipe for disaster.

Let's paint a scenario: I want to look like Alice Eve on my wedding night. I try the spinach-only diet. I develop an eating disorder and this is the first step towards that. Would that be okay?

It may be a habit. For example, I prefer eye contact when talking to someone. It's plain from the scene that Kirk likes Marcus. His look is a mixture of embarrassment and interest, which is a completely normal reaction.

Absurd is your view. Feel free to have it, and I'll feel free to see that overtly gratuitous scene as sad hackery.

See it as whatever you like, just don't assume anyone else is going to see it the same way. You feel it's gratuitous, I feel it isn't. Either way, Damon Lindelof shouldn't have apologized, because he owes nothing to people who think a simple underwear shot is gratuitous, a shot that 50 years ago was already mainstream movie fare. If you do want to avoid gratuitous (and by that I mean not-even-remotely-nude people), make certain you stay away from most television, magazines, billboard ads, and movies. Hell, even Disney gets in on the skimpy thing, what with that racy teen rebel Ariel and her clamshells, or Jasmine and her way too revealing Whore of Babylon attire.

People do realize that this scene lasted a whole 2 seconds, right? Out of a 2 hour film filled with violence? The people who SHOULD be complaining are the women watching this film filled with hunks and we get nothing in return

I was so happy when I watched that scene last night. (I've been catching up on that brilliant series)
Although, to be fair, you did get Kirk shirtless for a few seconds in the Caitian bed scene earlier in the film.

Oh, I did complain up thread about that. There definitely wasn't any real balance going on there. I mean, if they are handing out gratuitous shots, then why not a lean Quinto? Cumberbatch has fans, and so I don't think a shot of him undressing would have unwelcome for those that are interested.

I was so happy when I watched that scene last night. (I've been catching up on that brilliant series)

That's probably my favorite episode of Sherlock, and not even because of that part (funny as it was). That whole series is great to watch and I can't wait for the next season...January is so far away!

Yes, it is. I'm almost done with the last episode (I've only had the chance to see half of it), and I'm already frustrated that there aren't any more for a while, though I believe you just finished Series 3, while Netflix only has the first and second series. So that means I get more episodes soon.

Actually, they only finished filming episode 2 of series 3 today. They won't pick up filming for another 2 months because the cast has prior engagements (Freeman on The Hobbit and so forth). So they will finish filming Series 3 in August of this year.

In the 2009 movie while there were two women in their underwear and only one man Kirk, they were wearing twice as much clothing as him.
Kirk should have been wearing a vest over his nipples or the women should have been braless with nipples exposed.

Hot? Also yes, and very beautiful and very nice underwear and certainly no less underwear than Gaila had.

Would it not have been "gratuitous" if she had been shown having sex with Kirk rather than just standing there? If the answer to that question is yes than hopefully any future Alice Eve underwear scenes involve an equally naked man. To avoid scandal.

Aisha Hinds who played the reserve navigator had a fuller figure, although I thought the standard mini skirt didn't really suit her that well, I think something with more sleeves and a slightly longer skirt would have flattered her more, the clipped shoulders on nu-uniforms accentuates the actress's shoulders and more muscled arms more.

This topic is nothing new though. Don't forget Grace Lee Whitney had problems with diet pills in the sixties and Shatner starved himself to stay slim enough to suit the TMP uniforms.

I do not understand why the scene is being criticized. Go see Fast Six and you'll probably see more random scenes of scantily clad females. Anyway, I have to agree that that scene from STID was random. But then again, most eye candy scenes like that are random and for movies and tv shows these days, it sells. Alice Eve had a great looking body to begin with, and she had every right to show it off!

However, that said, I would like to jump off of my high horse, for a minute, and offer you an apology. I'm being a "bit of a knob," as it was told to me in another thread, and that person's evaluation is absolutely correct. I can be stubborn; too stubborn, and sometimes my mouth gets in the way of my brain, so I do apologize for being a bit of a knob.
