After seven years of hearing this repeated again and again, today I saw students at one of the most liberal campuses in America chanting in unison:
"USA! USA! USA!" Then they sang the star spangled banner.

It is humbling to observe a democracy such as yours at work and to see the amount patriotic spirit that its people have.

This is not a joke thread. I'm dead serious about what I said. (The subject was meant to be sarcastic)

Patriotism is one of the finest virtues, when it's not subsumed by nationalism.

And, admittedly, Americans skirt the fine line between the two every day.

I've always said, however, that we are like a set of siblings. We will beat the shit out of each other one min, then go laugh and have a drink the next.

Well you hafta understand, Liberals tend not to be in tiny small towns. So they're not from "real america". they're not "real" americans. They're also not patriotic.
Plus they are oppressing Christians. WAR ON XMASSSSS!!!

One of Obama's persistent messages, and the message of Americans who "get it," is that America's values are not limited to any one nation (they were intended by the Founders to address fundamental issues of human existence and so cannot be limited to any specific geographic region) and therefore American values and nationalism are mutually exclusive.

I do not think that liberals are anti-american. But many liberals want to change a lot of things that define what "American" is.

Such as? I could assume of course, using your sig and the general tone of your post as a guide, but I'll allow you to elaborate first.

While I appreciate the spirit of this thread but if I never had to hear that "U-S-A! U-S-A!" chant ever again I'd be a happy man. I'm not anti-American by any means but that gutteral jingoism just rubs me wrong. Especially during gracious concession speeches.

QFT! :techman:

Well, to give you one example, this whole notion of "equality". All men are created equal, yes, but many libs want all men to BE equal. This is evidenced in a lot of things: affirmative action, welfare, taxes on rich people, willy nilly immigration laws, etc, etc.

And the basis of this being equal, usually is determined by things like race and gender. A man is equal to a woman and a black person is equal to a white person, but "liberal" equality suggests that minorities need extra help to be created equally.

I have to agree. Rabid patriotism, especially the post-9/11 variety just gets on my damn nerves.
OTOH, I'm actually feeling a bit of it today. For the first time in eight years I'm not embarassed for my country.

I do not think that liberals are anti-american. But many liberals want to change a lot of things that define what "American" is.

And I'd say there are just as many, if not more right-wingers (especially those with a religious slant) who'd be happy to do the same.

Yes, it's the Right Wingers who try to redefine Patriotism and American Values. The United States is a Liberal country, founded by Liberal men based on Liberal principles.

Nearly bankrupt? Embroiled in two wars? Who'd want to change that?

But seriously, what you think is American is not necessarily what your neighbour thinks America is. I don't think "America" is any one thing, and I don't think "rampant predatory capitalism" and "empire building" is anywhere in the constitution.
