Let's talk about the elephant in the room, this series violates Roddenberry's vision big time

At this point I dislike all the characters so much that I'm not sure that I'll be able to appreciate even the sciency stand-alone episodes, assuming those are even coming.

I watched the AfterTrek talk show hosting one of the writers and it literally filled me with anger how he was proud of creating this fake trek, clearly Star Trek couldn't possibly mean any less to him.
You must have watched a different show

But enough about Janeway and Voyager...

Someone get Janeway some aloe vera for that burn

Tastes differ dude. I mean, the show has potential, and arguably is off to a better start than any post TOS first season of Trek, and I'll continue to watch it and pay for it in hopes I start enjoying it more. But I haven't seen a single episode which I'd rate as better than 2.5 stars or six on a scale of ten yet. And I'm not saying that because "it's not Trek" or because I'm pissed at how the Klingons look. The characterization has been inconsistent, the plots are full of obvious holes, and the writing is clunky. At least the direction and cinematography took a major leap forward in Episode 3, but I think the show needs a lot more improvement before I'd call it "really good."

Totally, dude.

Tastes indeed differ. And if people don't like it, that's fair. But objectively it's hard to argue that this isn't a well-made, high quality show, in comparison to current high quality, well-rated programming.

Don't like this kind of drama? Fine. Don't think it's award winning? Gotcha. Think it's not quite what you want out of Star Trek? Yo bruh, I feel ya.

But to say the acting, story, characters, and production are outright bad is just plain silly. The quality is there, on par with anything on TV right now.

e.g.: I hate walking dead these days. I think the story has gotten stale and the characters no longer hold my interest. But there is no doubt it's high quality television.

The same is true of Discovery.

I actually mostly like what the producers and other people involved have said in the interviews. They seems to be really enthusiastic and do seem to have a genuine love of Trek. They also seem to get the socially progressive nature of Star Trek.

But...

I'm not so sure much of that is actually reflected on screen. For example, before the show aired there was a lot of talk how this is a first show with a female captain with female a XO. Well, after the first two episodes, it is again two guys in command, and overall this just seems bleak and filled with nasty people. Maybe it will get better, I really hope it does. But as I've already said ad nauseam, I think I would have preferred a show about Georgiou's exploration ship Shenzhou over a show about Lorca's black ops ship Discovery.

I don't find losers who make bad decisions and stuff up every five minutes fun to watch either.
What does FOX's The Orville have to do with this discussion. ;)

Early Trek was good because Roddenberry had a lighter supervisory touch and let more talented creative minds develop the details with their excellent world-building ideas.

A lot of that (and many other aspects fans then loved about the original Star Trek can be credited to the influence and involvement of Gene L. Coon.

I get it when people say "I don't want a utopia", but that implies the alternative is not overdone. Trying to make an action show with extremely cranky and hostile characters is the norm nowadays (I could list all popular crime/action shows, The Walking Dead, The Game of Thrones and so on where most characters are hostile pricks). It might depend to what extend people go out of their way to watch various show, maybe they watch only a couple a season and they think it's not overdone, for me the way TNG showed a Utopia (in most episodes) was extremely unique and rare.

Yes, and I'd prefer a TNG Season 8 filmed and produced in 1994. But it isn't going to happen.

dark, depressing, everyone is nasty
Really? Landry was nasty, Burnham a bit sharp but also apologetic. Stamets was a bit arrogant and possessive. Tilly, Saru, perfectly pleasant. Lorca welcoming, paternal, passionate. That's about it for speaking starfleet roles. Doesn't seem that bad to me. "Dark", no more so than Trek's been before. It wasn't at all depressing.

I didn't like DS9 all that much when it was on the air, so I stopped watching. After getting all caught up years later, I wish I had stuck with the show at the time.

I will never say people should simply not watch. What I will say is, stop the incessant complaints about things that aren't going to change.

Wishing it were different, or saying "I'd have preferred X or Y or Z" get incredibly tiresome. Nobody gets exactly what they want. There's so much diversity in expectations, wants, and enjoyment, they were never going to make everyone happy. So far they're getting critical acclaim and the audience is largely enjoying the show.

Talking about the show, discussing flaws and hopes for how things may unfold in a way that pleases you more are fair points that create interesting discussions.

"It sucks, it's too dark, I hate these characters, it's not TOS" add nothing to the discourse.

While not 100%, it is using some of the major trends now in television, ones which don't suit some fans as it doesn't fit the established form used for Star Trek.
That is true. It's following the trend of recent shows. That's different than using tired tropes. This Trek is very different than any previous Trek. Also agree that different people will react different ways, like with everything else.
