Lets kill Wesley

topcat

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I remember back in the 90s hearing about how some trek bulletin boards had weekly debates on how to kill little Wesley. I am just curious as to how that originated back then? And when that might have ended?

Welsey is another example of the infallible character like Rey from The Force Awakens, Kate from LOST, and Will Robinson; an all knowing, all super character, and can't do no wrong. Plausibility escapes these characters. They're boring, and they're hard to root for because those characters never earn anything. They're simply entitled to do it because the writing demands it.
I'm guessing the hate ended when he left the show and when he returned he was written like a normal human being in "First Duty" IMO.

And just like with those other characters listed*, the idea that Wesley never did anything wrong is exaggerated.

*Except Will, I don't know Lost in Space well enough to comment on it.

He could have been sent to mine dilithium after creating the rogue nanites.
He could have been sent to mine dilithium after covering up the death of a classmate.
He could have been sent to mine dilithium after betraying the landing party on the Indian reservation planet.
Hazardous places, dilithium mines.
The best would've been having Welsey get graphically dismembered and eaten by Worf the prehistoric klingon in Genesis. As a side note, Wesley's mother should have been sent to mine dilithium due to her incompetence that caused the grisly deaths of several of her crew mates. She even admitted to Barclay at the end that it was her fault, generally medical malpractice is punished in most societies.
Other nice ways to see Welsley disposed of would be a transporter malfunction (a pair of smoldering sneakers), explosive decompression when the Borg sliced into the ship (and/or him being processed into a drone), a broken neck in the anbo-jitsu ring from the Icarus Factor (because the costume would be funny), and Geordi accidentally re-activates the warp core with Wesley inside.

Ok, I agree with you about Rey, but this makes me think you've never watched Lost. Kate screws up on a regular basis. She gets captured a lot, she leaks information, she plays games with people based on her desperate need not to belong. The only time she seems anything close to what you say is when she's alone with Sawyer.

If any character on Lost can do no wrong it's Hurley.

Wesley is portrayed as pretty perfect in seasons 1 and 2. It's toned down in season 3 starting with Evolution.

This thread should just be a kill Wesley game thread. I'll contribute:

Wesley is killed instantly for stepping on the forbidden alien grass.
Lore snaps Wesley's neck once he sees Wesley catching on to his plan.
Inhabited by Sarek, Wesley's annoying behavior causes Picard to beat him to death.
Kurn stabs Wesley for questioning his leadership during the crew exchange.
Picard saved Jack from the fire, not Wesley.

I could go all day.

I don't get why people think Wesley was perfect.

He had a very annoying manner about him. Even if he's good at everything, that is one really big flaw.

There are several definitions to the word infallible. Kate was capable of being a master of disguise, escaping law enforcement in a whim, she shoots guns better than the men--just like Juliette, who was another eye roller, she can literally do everything a man can and barely bleed. A later episode she gets shot, and she's still capable of handling herself better than the guys.
Hey, I'm all for my liberation and strong characters like Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, Amy Pond, and women from "Call the Midwife" but I believe characters should earn it. Kate never earned it, not even raising Aaron, it was a piece of cake being a surrogate Mom. Aaron doesn't even make hell for her. Kate should've wrote a book on how easy it was to raise a child that's not even hers. She's infallible.
And Yes, Hugo, and Walt, and the dog were also infallible.

Wesley was far from my favorite character for sure, but I never got the extreme hate he received. For me, he was just sort of there. I know in seasons 1 & 2, he was a bit of a Mary Sue, but by Season 3 there weren't that many things about him that were overly annoying. And really, ALL the TNG characters had things about them that were annoying in the first couple seasons...even Picard. Season 3 &4 especially, when Wesley was featured, the character had grown to the point of actually being a decent one, and by Final Mission, I was actually sorry to see him written out, but at least he went out strong. But unfortunately, the guest appearances for Wesley were not that great.

I did NOT like Wesley, but I did not want to kill him, or kill him off...I was GLAD when the Traveler took him...

I... I... I didn't want Wesley killed off either, and I thought he became a better character after First Duty. What Wesley needed was maturity, and he needed some weaknesses... like Ashley Judd for instance. I liked him more as a character after those episodes he returned. It doesn't seemed right for Wesley to not have an important part in the last TNG movie, but I doubt at the time Nemesis was going to be... until the box office numbers.

While Traveling with his awesome Traveler powers, Wesley slips into subspace and is captured by the Schisms aliens and dismembered.

...or steps into a sun..

...or into space...

...or travels back so far in time on earth that his immunity is worthless and he dies in 2 hours from lung-busting bacteria...

You get the idea. Try it at home, fun for the whole family.

I'm not a huge Wesley fan but killing Wesley was a stupid exercise.

Wes isn't infallible at all, he made wrong decisions quite frequently, including playing ball near a fenced area, evolving nanites, and performing illegal maneuvers in training.

Wesley becoming a Maquis Commander. Would've like to have seen that.

What's unlikeable about Wesley is that he gushes on an Olympian scale. Some of his scenes with Picard where he simpers away verge on the unwatchable. Whilst hokey, him being cast as multi-talented Mozart-type doesn't really bother me too much. It's only when he leaves the show does his character improve!
