I've taken "sick" days at work before because I was caught up in a good book and wanted to finish it. Usually you don't have to give a reason why you are taking off, if you have sick or vacation time, they don't ask for a reason.
That is ridiculous. I find that to be an immature and slack attitude.
I can understand taking a day off for a severe and incapacitating depression, but just to finish a fucking book or some other lame excuse.
If I was your employer and I learned of that you would definitely be on my radar as someone of questionable judgment.
I didn't realize we had so many perfect people on these boards. Just to clarify, at that time my employer gave everyone so many vacation days and also so many sick/personal days per year, based on length of employment. Sick/personal days were interchangeable. You could take them off if you were sick, or you could take them off for "personal" reasons - no questions asked. If I wanted to "finish a fucking book" then I could do so without repercussion. It was time off that I earned so I had no problem taking it off and feeling guilty.
The same goes for vacation, we could take a vacation day if we chose. One bout of the flu could wipe out all our sick time so we would then use our vacation time when we were sick. I suppose those people should have been fired for using vacation when they were sick, instead of actually vacationing?
It's certainly indicative of either (a) having a very low estimation of the importance of one's own job, or (b) having very little consideration for one's colleagues.
Or maybe, just maybe, it was a good idea to take a day off after working over 30 straight days in a row? The job I had required lots of overtime (voluntary, but sort of expected) -the bottom line is you have no idea of the any of the details of my job or its requirements. Some people worked over 60 days in a row with no time off (technically wasn't allowed but often overlooked) - and some of us were "forced" to take a weekend off if/when our manager felt we needed a break.
All of you perfect people need to take a look at the title of this thread and get back on topic, instead of thinking you are so much better than others.
