Leonard Nimoy Passes Away

The "taking a day off work" part is just a bit strange to me. What boss would even let one of their employees take a day off work because of an actor or celebrity dying? I know that if I tried that with my boss, he would laugh and say, "You're kidding right?"

Not strange at all, at least to me. I've taken "sick" days at work before because I was caught up in a good book and wanted to finish it. Usually you don't have to give a reason why you are taking off, if you have sick or vacation time, they don't ask for a reason.
Uh...yeah.

I have to agree Austin here. I am quite saddened by the loss of Leonard Nimoy, but I can also put things in perspective. My grief is nowhere on the same level as his family and close friends--they actually knew him.

Reminds me of how many people were going on and on when Princess Diana died--people who only knew her (and practically not at all) from tabloids and occasional appearances on television. And she didn't do half of what Nimoy accomplished in his life. It's almost as if there is something of a contest to prove who is the most feeling and caring.

That is ridiculous. I find that to be an immature and slack attitude.

I can understand taking a day off for a severe and incapacitating depression, but just to finish a fucking book or some other lame excuse.

If I was your employer and I learned of that you would definitely be on my radar as someone of questionable judgment.

I was trying to put into words above how I felt last night but I was struggling to. Then I remember something that summed it up perfectly, which is an early trailer for Star Trek VI. It's here...

For me how I feel about this, and to an extent, how I felt when Dee Kelley and Jimmy Doohan left us, is perfectly summed up in "they have been our guides, our protectors and our friends".

Star Trek, mainly the original series (since we're talking a couple of decades before TNG even existed) has been a constant in my life literally since I was old enough to remember. As much as it may just be entertainment to some, I am reminded of Picard's comment in Generations that time is a companion that goes with us on the journey [of life] and, for me, Star Trek and, by proxy, those who brought it to life, was a companion that went with me through my life. When I was a young kid and I was bullied at school I knew I could come home and stick on a tape of TOS and lose myself. When I was an adult and I had a bad day at work, the same was always true. When I started out in my career and my life, Star Trek's years with me had helped teach me compassion, hope and positivity - some of which still inform my world view 40 years later. I've read countless behind the scenes books, documentaries, interview shows and whatever you can imagine. Whenever the TOS stars were in the UK for whatever reason, I would make sure to be there to meet them.

So, for me, a loss like this ceases to just be about the loss of a celebrity, but rather takes on a much more personal form because it feel like the loss of a family member, and not just any family, but one very personal, secret and unique to me. Add to that that Nimoy himself was a real genuine mensch, and this just breaks my heart. Hell, I'm still welling up typing this now and I've already had a night's sleep since hearing the mews. I have a tight feeling in my chest that I think will take some time to go away.

And now they're showing his appearance on Rawhide...alas, he's doing "redface".
Thankfully the show is in B&W.
I was being figurative, of course...he's playing an Indian/Native American.

Heh...tomorrow night they're kicking off a string of Nimoy appearances with the Columbo in which he kills Anne Francis. They just showed that one a few weeks ago. There's a nice, meaty guest role, though.

Too bad MeTV doesn't show The Virginian...he has a pretty meaty guest role there alongside Michael Ansara. COZI might be showing it, but it's hard to tell when the program guide is still giving originally scheduled programming.

I knew what you meant. I just thought that if the show were in color, the "Native Americans" would look even more phony.

In any case, it looks like his next appearance on Me is tonight at 9 EST, when Spock returns to his digitally remastered homeworld.

February is the cruelest month

Knew when he was taken to the hospital that the news wasn't going to be good, I had just ran one of his first films ( 1954's THEM! in which he plays a minor role).

The Leonard Nimoy episode of Bonanza is on MeTV right now...not the originally scheduled one that still shows up on my program guide. He actually plays a fairly small role in it, but he's in it.

It would be a neat trick to take all these little roles and put them together in a compendium.

There was a part of me that thought his last role should have been as Narab, somehow surviving events from his 1952 film

I also remember him on a commercial where we hear only his voice, talking to a child about us Earthings.

And it looks like the regularly scheduled episode of Wanted: Dead or Alive currently airing just happens to be one with De Kelley guesting...! :)

I'm watching his "Outer Limits" appearances tonight..then "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" then several TOS episodes followed by "Unification" then ST films, it's amazing how much work he was involved with..

This "he's not really gone as long as we remember him" quote really feels like a worthless platitude right now. No offense to those who are posting it for whom it gives some comfort. But he's dead. He won't be making any more movie appearances. It's over. It certainly feels like he's gone to me.

It's certainly indicative of either (a) having a very low estimation of the importance of one's own job, or (b) having very little consideration for one's colleagues.
