Closure is not the filmmakers' stated goal for these characters.

That's fine, but this is to confuse what the filmakers wish with what the fans wish, for "closure" comes at the end of characters' lives, not the beginning. With Spock and Kirk official "dead" in the 24th or 25th century, the fans can have closure for their characters. "Prequel" stories with different actors are just icing on the cake. Speaking for myself, the only reason I'd go see the new actors in the roles is because its new Trek, not because it's these characters.

I dunno. While Nimoy can be made to resemble Spock, Shatner just isn't believable as Kirk anymore, physically. Even in Generations he was pushing it.
