LONDON, England (CNN) -- A group of Heath Ledger fans have taken their reverence for the late "The Dark Knight" star to a whole new level.

Heath Ledger fans launched a petition calling for studios to remove the Joker from future Batman movies.

Followers of the actor, who electrified audiences with his chilling reinvention of the Joker in the second Batman blockbuster, are calling for the character to be retired from the movies permanently.

Ledger supporters at new Web site, The Ultimate Joker, launched a petition last week calling for studios to remove the Joker from any future Batman movies. The petition currently has 2,431 supporters.

"We think Heath deserves this honor," the site's team leader, Fer Barbella, told CNN from Buenos Aires, Argentina. "He is the ultimate Joker.

"We are Batman fans from the comics and from the movies," he said, "After we saw 'The Dark Knight,' we thought this Joker was really the best. It deserves to be withdrawn from any Batman sequels.

"When Michael Jordan retired, they withdrew the number 23 jersey as an honor. It's the same thing with Heath."

Barbella said he thinks any new performance just won't be able to top Ledger's.

The Web site is the brainchild of Barbella, 34; Nico Pimentel, 33; and Natalia Rodoni, 33, all advertising creatives in Buenos Aires.

The trio say that if they collect enough names, they may go to the studio to present their petition.

"As soon as we start seeing that we have more than 50,000 names on our Web site, perhaps we will go to the Warner Brothers gate and do a bit of activism," Pimentel said.
what next? a 6 month comic titled "Joker R.I.P" where DC ends the joker? Sure Ledger was great in the role, but don't let it deprive future generations of a new movie Joker.

That's just silly. Obviously losing Ledger was tragic, but that doesn't mean future generations can't see a new Joker. Olivier was great as Hamlet, but there have been other good ones since he died.

I say leave him out of any more Bale/Batman movies, but we don't need to end the character forever.

I would concede to that.

Wait at least till the next reboot to have another Joker.
There should really only be one for each generation.
This one was especialy good.

By that note should we have another Kahn for the rebooted
Star Trek?

Agreed.

Any replacement Joker would fail in the current trilogy, and be horribly offensive, but there is always room for a new interpretation down the road.

And besides, Cesar Romero is the ultimate movie Joker

They have nothing to worry about. We won't see another Joker in the theaters for probably twenty years or so. Permanently retiring the character from film would be stupid.

There wouldn't be any great push to retire Joker if Heath hadn't died, so why should his death be used as an excuse? I haven't seen TDK, but I'm sure he was great in it. This does not mean that nobody should ever be allowed to play Joker ever again. That's just bullshit.

Because he would have been able to reprise the role.

He is dead, he was the Joker. Again I ask, who would be
a fan of Kahn being brought back now that Ricardo is dead?

Its kind of pointless, there's no way they 'recast' the Joker in this series anyways. and if they do another reboot some years down the road, of course there should be another Joker. JOKER IS BATMAN's most iconic villain, and on his own is just as iconic as batman.

Ledger may have been good in the role, but that's no reason to prevent authors from using the character in the future so I'd vote no on this. The Joker and Batman sort of form a yin and a yang - they need each other and are a natural compliment to each other. I'd hate to lose that.

Khan and The Joker are not even close to the same thing. You can't logically make the comparison.

That said, if they did in fact decide to recast Khan for a future film, I can safely say that Ricardo Montelban's death wouldn't even enter my mind.

^A better example, perhaps, James Doohan and DeForest Kelley are dead. Does that mean their most famous characters should be in the new Star Trek movie ?

Don't recast the Joker in any "Nolan-verse" Batman movie, but the Joker is an essential part of the Batman story. That won't change.

This is a great idea!
Movie studios always listen to the every whim of hardcore fans... that's what makes the most money.

It was a good performance and a good movie. However both the performance and the film have worn thin on me the more I think about it. There is too much coincidence, and luckiness for the Joker, and I think the character was creepiest in his first or second big scene.

That said this whole story I think is just an attempt to keep Ledger and TDK in the news.
