Another thing I though came out of this episode was the "Voyager Academy" or night class to say the least, that any of the crew could have engiggened themselves, and the Maquis could have earnt themselves some Pips instead of making do with those "provisional rank badges" but we find out years later in life Line that there is no forethought towards redemption for these people even as Icheb is studying to become an officer himself.
I wonder what Neelix went through to get his Uniform in Year of Hell, other than the replicators were broken and he was wearing dead mens clothes? Did he earn his position or was it a gift?
