Thanks, it was wild there for awhile. There was literally no one in the company hiring. She got lucky, a whole new group was being formed and the HR rep knew she would be a good fit.

Still took 3 interviews plus time with the HR rep. So after 23 years with the company, she was able to stay.

It is a damn shame how they treat long term employees nowadays.

And on another note, and not to say your wife in particular wasnt qualified or anything just a general comment, I find that keeping individuals based solely on seniority alone is one of the most annoying things.

Oh, I agree but some companies simply get rid of the older tenured staff to save payroll money. My friends company got rid of 4 senior people and ended up hiring 6 junior people to pick up the workload.

Many people I know have been laid off, for a few it's very bad. For others, people I graduated with simply cannot find jobs.

Almost all the temp workers in my warehouse (i work as a shipping agent) have been let go.. from the 10-15 or so only 4 remained.
We assume that if the workload (we are currently only doing about 50-60% of our possible shipping volume due to the crisis) stays this way or, god forbid, even drops lower that these will be let go too.

Then it will get to people who only have timed contracts like mine. My contract expires August 31 and i hope they'll renew it for a year. I have good reviews so far and my team leaders are very satisfied with me so i hope they'll put in a good word for me.

I'll probably know by June if my contract will be prolonged and i hope that by Summer 2010 the whole thing will improve so i'll get my permanent contract.

I was unemployed for a longer time back in 2007 and i don't want to go back to that.
