Layoffs?

My overtime (5 hours/week) ends as of March 1st so I have to make some big adjustments. On the bright side, I might finally be able to take holidays and vacation time with no pay loss :/

My station, USPS, just dropped six carrier positions. Five by attrition, one transitional employee, non career who is hired to be fired during upcoming automation periods. However our new machines are not here yet. Those with less then six years service, when layoff protection kicks in, are starting to get nervous. Especially after the Postmaster General asked Congress to lift the six day delivery requirement.

I was finished start of feb got to go and sign on today and i know the job center is probably going to have a go at me because in the last 2 weeks all the jobs i have found that i can do i can't get to because i can't drive.:brickwall:

None so far.
My company claims it's recession-tolerant, but we'll see about when the companies and charities that pay us start cutting back on their spending. :-/

Well, from the villain's perspective, I've been told that I have to fire 5 people before the end of the month for budgetary reasons. Not looking forward to that.
Yeah, it's hard to tell people they dont have a job when they didnt do anything to deserve it.

My neighbour had worked for Dell and was laid off.

Well, it turned out to be 10 people. The president of the company addressed everyone on Thursday morning and announced that there would be 10 people let go. None of the management knew he was going to say this, and it cought us completely by surprise, and it freaked out the entire company all day; it was like a mausoleum. So myself and the other team leader spent Thursday afternoon looking at those with the lowest work performance and making decisions. A few were easy, but most we agonized over. By 1pm today, all ten were fired. Not laid off, fired.

As soon as I got home I had a rum and coke.

Have you , or someone you know been laid off, or fired due to the bad economy?

Yeah, a few of my relatives have been laid off from their jobs but luckily I'm still with mine. It's only part-time, but I'm lucky I at least got something. I try and get all the hours I can with my job.

Several of my friends were laid off when the Baltimore Opera went under a couple of months ago. While my current job is relatively safe, the University I work for has just announced a hiring freeze, no overtime (I'm salaried, so I don't get overtime anyway) and, as of July 1, a salary freeze for FY2010 becasue the endowment too a 20% hit. Also, the senior Administration is taking a 5% pay cut, which will go to shore up financial aid.

I was a victim of the post-911 recession. I was laid off back in 2002 from the Baltimore Sun. At least the Union got us decent severance packages; I got 3 months pay, which got me through for quite some time until I found another job.

Sounds like my alma mater. They're projecting the endowment to be off by 30% this fiscal year, though I suspect with full accounting of illiquid assets, it'll be closer to 40%.

Actually, I was refering to a specific location here in Edmonton where a significant number were let go.

I'm a freelancer so I can't get fired or laid off, but my hours have all but disappeared.

However, I'm glad to hear from the poster upstream that this is all just a figment of the media's imagination and that everything is actually fine.

Sorry, I understood that. Just following up on my other post, and considering the name of the thread is "Layoffs?", just emphasizing that in this case the dismissals weren't layoffs. Even if business picks up again in a week, they won't be offered their jobs back. I work for a much smaller company than Dell, and ten people is (was) 15% of the department.

Looking at my other post, it might have seemed a little pissy; that was unintentional. Apologies.

On my hockey team there are four people who've been hit recently with job loss. One in auto finance, two in mortgage, one in advertising/marketing. With 18 on the roster, that's 22%.

My wife was told she was being laid off back in Dec. Merry Christmas!!! She was given a 60 day notice and was finally able to find a new job this week.

I had a interview today but do not think i will get it because when she said how much it paid she quoted the minimum wage for someone under 22 so at 26 i will be considered too old for the job.:klingon:

Thanks, it was wild there for awhile. There was literally no one in the company hiring. She got lucky, a whole new group was being formed and the HR rep knew she would be a good fit.

Still took 3 interviews plus time with the HR rep. So after 23 years with the company, she was able to stay.

It is a damn shame how they treat long term employees nowadays.

Some good news in an otherwise shitty job market! Great to hear!
