Layoffs?

Yes, my wifes uncle got layed off, he made double glazed windows and doors. Demand for the product have dropped and therefore less staff was needed.

Wife is just holding her breath on her job, same with my father. Father-in-law is on a "Wait and see" list-- I think end of May/1st of June is when they'll make a final decesion on his job.

Well, from the villain's perspective, I've been told that I have to fire 5 people before the end of the month for budgetary reasons. Not looking forward to that.

I know a lot of people who were laid off, although they occurred as a result of a corporate-wide outsourcing endeavor that began long before the recent downturn in the economy.

My father's company has laid off half of their salaried work force (including thirty of the high level administrators). He finds out about his job in the next few weeks. From what's been said they will be keeping 90 people and on the seniority list he's 90, but like I said its just a rumor (last week they said only 80).

Please keep your fingers crossed for us.

Fortunately government contracting seems to be mostly immune to the situation. Lockheed is actually throwing massive amounts of money at our little company right now to support an accelerated integration timetable. We can't get enough engineers off other projects to use it all.

Which means overtime pay for me, if I want it.

^ That's not entirely accurate. The company my father works for works pretty much exclusively with the United States government.

Yeah, it's hard to tell people they dont have a job when they didnt do anything to deserve it.

My neighbour had worked for Dell and was laid off.

It's going to be a shell game for a while. Some sectors will gain, others will lose; even within the same company, some divisions will gain, some will lose.

Which is where my FIL is at: Depending on which contracts the company picks up, he may have a job after May, other contracts means his division is closed and retooled for something else and he may not be needed.

Nope. Not a one.

We actually have a lot of new businesses opening up, and most of the current businesses are hiring lots of new people.

There have been here, but then I work for a very large mobile phone manufacturer so it's no surprise.

Not for economic reasons per se, but my father's wife got axed...or rather she was a contract employee and they decided not to renew.

I just got hit with a paycut. My work ethic just got cut, too. Funny how that is. :shifty:

Bad economy my ass, this is way too overhyped by the 24 hour news media. I know tings are tight but its really not that bad.

I already can have all the OT I want, plus we are getting a lot of extra infrastructure work from the State of Mass. over the next few months. We have backlog untilabout the end of the year.

My wife just got a nice raise.

The stores here are all packed. I don't know anyone having economic problems. Most people I know are busy as hell.

My Macroeconomics instructor thinks that the unemployment level will hit the rate it was ~1980, which was around 10%. I agree with you, though, about news media hype. Recessions come and go and the key is to ride them out. People never learn that expansions and booms always end and get caught with their pants down when it happens.

My OH is self-employed. I supposed he could fire himself. I work for a university which generally only gets affected a couple of years after the event, although a lot of young people are going back to full time FE/HE because they can't get jobs.

I agree with you - your individual experience says more than hard numbers and analysis ever could.
