Late Season 1/Early Season 2 Best Watching Order

Odo

Commander
Red Shirt
I'm rewatching Voyager - I was wondering as to the watching order, since some episodes for season one were placed in the beginning of season 2. I'm guessing while it's preferable to watch the show in production order, but that it doesn't make that big of a difference - any thoughts?

(Also, is that the only time during the show's run that there was a difference b/w production and airing order?)

If you stick strictly to production order you'll eventually end up watching Sacred Ground, False Profits and Flashback between Basics, Part I and Basics, Part II. Up to that point you'll get the benefit of the stardates being in the right order but it doesn't have much effect on the stories. Unless there's something obvious I'm forgetting.

Edit: oh right, production order will put the S2 Tom Paris arc out of order slightly.

Forgive me for being dense, but what's wrong with broadcast order? Genuine question.

They aired some episodes out of order, carrying a few episodes form the end of season one and placing them randomly throughout the beginning of season 2. It sounds like the only thing this may have affected was the 'Tom Paris is a traitor' storyline from season 2.

Appreciated!

I feel like I might have phrased my post badly and confused things, so I'll try to make more sense.

I don't think it really matters much, it just means you're doomed to watch Twisted earlier and the season 2 opener is now the season 1 finale, but if anyone's curious those episodes are:

2x03 - Projections (Prod #117)
2x04 - Elogium (118)
2x06 - Twisted (119)
2x01 - The 37's (120)

Also, is that the only time during the show's run that there was a difference b/w production and airing order?
There are slight differences in later seasons as well, but it seems like watching the episodes in the order they aired in will keep the continuity intact. For example, these four season 3 episodes were filmed during season 2:

3x07 - Sacred Ground (143)
3x05 - False Profits (144)
3x02 - Flashback (145)
3x01 - Basics, Part II (146)

It's a little hit and miss, but in the UK we had The 37s air as the first season finale like it was originally intended.

Janeway asked the crew if anyone wanted to stay behind on the planet with humans, but no one took her up on her offer.
Thematically, it worked well, especially after Caretaker and Janeway made the decision to strand the crew in the first place. .

No of the other out-of-place episodes had much effect on the story.

Just be ready to face-palm when you get to "Non Sequitur".

HARRY: "Oh, wow. I'm back on Earth. I'm living in an upscale apartment with a gorgeous fiancee. I've got a barista who knows just how I like my coffee. I'm working for the SCE, and I'm on track to get my hollow pip eight months out of the Academy. No more taking cold showers on a tin can stranded 70,000 light years from the nearest Vulcan mocha, with a captain who's inexplicably determined to ruin my career by keeping me at ensign for seven years..."

"... I think I'll spend the whole frickin' episode trying to get back!"

They aired some episodes out of order, carrying a few episodes form the end of season one and placing them randomly throughout the beginning of season 2. It sounds like the only thing this may have affected was the 'Tom Paris is a traitor' storyline from season 2.

If you enjoy spotting continuity errors, go for the order that they aired them in. There are a few little things.

The season 1 holdovers into season 2 are easy to spot... they use the same font for the credits.

The season 2 holdovers are harder to spot, because they use stardates as if it was a season 3 episode. (Except for "BASICS, PART II", but it was the last one produced for season 2.) But in the end credits, season 1 and 2 episodes had Berman, Piller, and Taylor listed as Executive Producers. In season 3, Piller was taken out and put in the beginning as a Creative Consultant. That's how you can identify them.

Berman and the rest likely saw that UPN was going to do the same thing again, which is why the stardates of those reflect a season 3. Frankly, UPN screwed all of us out of getting 4 more episodes for season 3... VOYAGER should have ended up with the same amount of episodes as DS9.

But, and this is my personal opinion, given how the quality of season 3 was radically hit or miss... mostly in the middle of the season... I suppose we should be glad we didn't get those 4 episodes.

Thread bump.

I have to slightly disagree with your watching order for the season 1 episodes which were postponed for season 2

Four episodes were meant to be season 1 episodes but they were postponed for season 2. Those episodes are: Projections, Elogium, Twisted and The 37's. Their stardates indicate that they are season 1 episodes meant to take place ins 2371.

In Europe, those episodes were aired as season 1 episodes.

The best watching order of the season 1 and season 2 episodes are:

There's no difference between your order and mine.

Season 1 ends with The 37s in my order, and everything else from Season 2 goes in either broadcast or production order.

My sincere apologies.
I must have mis-read your post the first time, messing up Initiations with Projections or whatever I did.
I wasn't focused, due to activities around me.
Your order of episodes is correct.
