Last movie you saw?

2010: It's a major letdown compared to 2001 but the aero-braking around Jupiter was a cool scene.
The biggest problem is it's the sequel to a movie that wasn't supposed to have one. In Stanley Kubrick's eyes 2001 was a single, complete story. Peter Hyams had to recreate the 2001-related stuff for his film because (IIRC) Kubrick broke everything down after he was done with it.

Yes, but it was also based on A.C. Clarke's book of the same name. I've heard that Clarke and Kubrick were often at odds with each other, they didn't agree on a lot. If it were for Clarke, 2001 would have been very much like 2010, IE an average Sci. Fi. movie.

Absolutely, like for instance in the 2001 book the big monolith was around Saturn, not Jupiter, because Clarke's explanation for its creation was based on an earlier draft of the screenplay. The main reason he wrote a sequel book was that he never saw the original story the same way Kubrick did.

Yes, I remember that he said that the rings were three million years old and caused by "the aliens" accidentally. But it turns out that the rings are hundreds of millions of years old but he couldn't know that back then.

Just saw Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Overall something of a weak entry for a Del Toro vehicle but not terrible.

Dune 1984: The Baron is already a nasty villain in the book but they turned him into something indescribable.

Was it the dirctor's cut or the theatrical release you saw? The first time I saw it was in theaters. I hated it and felt like it didn't make any sense. Then I saw the director's cut, and it was way better. Still didn't do the book much justice, but it's hard to do a huge book any favors with a couple hours or so of film.

I think it's the director's cut because it doesn't start with Irulan's speech but with a bunch of explanations that I didn't see in the theatrical release.

You'd need at least four or five times that long to hope to do the book justice.

Yep. They did a miniseries back in 2000 that wasn't awful. It went into more depth and didn't stray much from the book as I recall, but then again, I haven't seen it since it came out.

Yes, I saw it and funny thing is that the guy who plays Paul Atreides is the same who plays the augment baddy on Enterprise. However, he has practically the same demeanor and shitty character as that last one, so either he's not much of an actor or his role has been written practically identical, which I find hard to believe. Kyle MacLachlan was a more nuanced and believable Paul.

He's a great voice actor. I haven't seen him in much else besides that one mini-series, so I don't know about his onscreen versatility.

Self/less over on Netflix. Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley are the reason to watch this. The plot is fairly predictable, but the acting is really pretty good. Reynolds showed some pretty good range. Decent movie, worth the 2 hrs to watch.

Aquaman - seems brown people do not live under the sea in Atlantis, that's cos black people can't swim right? mmmm

According to the idiots up in arms about the live action casting for The Little Mermaid, apparently, melanin can't develop in the sea.

Yes, the only black people in Aquaman were surface-born villains, but as I've always wanted to see Black Manta in live action I'm more than happy to let that slide.

I don't think so. When I took a long vacation in Corsica, I've spent most of my time in the water, mostly windsurfing, but it was the beginning so I wasn't very good at it and I fell many many times. Anyway, I've never been darker of skin in my life as I was by the end of that vacation.

No, no, you see, you weren't born under the sea and raised there. Dark pigments can't exist underwater because there's no sun. (Ignoring the literally thousands of animals that live underwater and are not all pale, eyeless albinos.)

I really wish I was kidding, but you will see this argument all over the place from people who are ass devastated that Ariel won't be white.

Einstein is rumored to have said, “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.”

Well, it's possible that he didn't say that himself but it's still very well thought-out.
