Last movie you saw?

The Dark Crystal over on Netflix. After powering through the new prequel series, I figured I'd watch the movie that started it all. Not as polished as the new series, but still hold up somewhat well. The VFX at the end are REALLY dated. The new versions of the Gelflings are much better than the rather 'wooden' 1982 move versions. It would be a hoot if The Jim Henson Company permitted the Netflix Team to re-make the 1982 movie as the last two series finale episodes of the new series. It would be really interesting to see what modern production values and a sizable budget bump would achieve.

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, finally. Now, I get a lot of the criticism, but I still enjoyed it very much.

Madness in the Method, the Jason Mewes directorial debut. Black comedy for fans of Kevin Smith, Mewes, and other B- and C-list celebrities.

A Million Ways to Die in the West, still not as good as the Ted movies, but still enjoyable.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla, Mothra, Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS. The only two entries in the Millennium series of Godzilla movies that are connected narratively. They are also the two shortest features in the Godzilla series since the 1970s. They finally figured out that they didn't need to stretch the movies to 100+ minutes, they cut out anything that slows the movies out, which would have helped a few other films like Godzilla 2000 or Godzilla vs Space-Godzilla. Also, this version of Mechagodzilla looks fantastic.

Last night I watched the Hammer Horror "Horror of Frankenstein", made in 1970 starring Ralph Bates.
It was so fucking bad it was hilariously enjoyable.

Last night I watched Ad Astra. Interesting sci fi film/psychological drama starring Brad Pitt. The movie is slow paced and is mostly carried by Pitt but I found it fascinating. It is not set too far from now but it was curious to see that things don't change much in this future. If you watch it, the scenes in the moon with give you a sense of why I say that. For most of the film, the realities of space are used properly but physics go out the windows towards the end.

The Childhood of a Leader
A beautiful, well-acted, but ultimately pointless slog of a movie with a good soundtrack. There's also a twist ending of sorts that's neither surprising nor significant in any way.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix last night via an Amazon rental. Not the shipwreck it was painted out to be. More of a subdued character piece than the usual Micheal Bay-esque action meltdown. The directing choices for the actors was way off, to the point it looked to me that Lawrence, McAvoy and Fassbender were just phoning in their performances. A seasoned director could have gotten more out of them, even with the dialog that they had. From me: B-

We went to see downton abbey. I admit apart from half an episode or so, I'd never watched it, before, so I may have not had the context of everyone else in the theater.

The Bounty (1984) when Mel Gibson was pretty
An early Liam Neeson movie too, if i remember. Two racists that make good movies, together for a moment in time. Beyond that, honestly the casting on that was incredible. Daniel Day Lewis in a role with at best, 4 or 6 lines. Laurence Olivier, Neil Morrisey, Wu Kuki Kaa, who is not as well known but was a great actor on par with any of them.

The sound track remains one of my favorites to this day.
