I was thinking Cumberbatch just to tease the Sherlock crowd. Put his name as a guest star, but not the part, then suddenly, Dragon.

Or cast him as Benedict Cumberbatch playing The Dragon, only to reveal that The Dragon is his nickname given by Vastra to discredit him as her main rival.

...

More seriously, if they cast Benedict Cumberbatch and announced him as playing John Smith that would be the biggest troll they could pull off.

Cast Benedict as John Smith. The Doctor says he won't forget that face.

13th doctor is cast and it's Benedict Cumberbatch

The doctor says his face resembles a man named John Smith.

I recently saw this episode. And, while there were good moments (The Doctor riding the sleigh, and the Danny/Clara moments, the verbal nod to "Alien") the issues I've had with previous episodes was apparent here: The alien villains aren't really fleshed out or explained - they're just 'there' to be stopped. For example, these Who facehuggers just happen to be around England wrecking havoc (or stealing people's dreams) and we don't know if it is a worldwide thing or if they're a small group or part of a bigger plan - we are still left with questions.

The best Christmas special, for me, is still the Matt Smith episode with Michael Gambon. The first time I got really emotional with a Doctor Who episode. However, as aforementioned, this one had me emotional in some parts as well...and we see that Capaldi's Doctor seems to be lighting it up a bit.

Aside from that, it sounds like Clara is coming back for next season - good news! - and rightfully so, since I gather that the Clara/Danny (Clanny? Dlara? Dara?) storyline is going to be given some closure, where we see Danny brought back from the dead at some point.

Umm... the Christmas special was that "closure", I thought.

Yeah. Honestly, if Danny comes back, I'll be super annoyed.

Yeah, whatever else people may think regarding Clara and whether or not her story is done or if it can continue, Danny's is definitely complete. He's dead, there is no coming back. Unless they decide to do something in Clara's last episode where Danny appears much like Amy did in Time of the Doctor, I doubt he'll ever be back again.

I enjoyed and I'm glad Clara's demise was put to rest in the Xmas Special. Capaldi is a good Doctor, Smith is my favorite DOCTOR, and love approach to the character. I think the Doctor loves Clara and I think she loves him too, I look forward to next adventure. I'm hoping it comes sooner than later.

Yes, we Who fans have our likes and dislikes in regards to Doctors and companions...;)

It has nothing to do with liking the companions. It has to do with storytelling. Danny died, and "Last Christmas" gave Clara closure so she could move on.

Bringing him back would just be bad for the narrative.

What's the word very similar to cocktease, for when you want someone to die but they just won't?

Oh?

Still cocktease?

Cool.

Clara could get a head Danny messing with her and commenting on everything and manipulating events and in the end he turns out not imaginary but a manifestation of the seasons big bad. ;)

Well, in post #230, it was stated that if Danny returned, there would be a personal annoyance. Hence, the reason I made a statement about personal fan likes and dislikes.;)

As for an actual return for those fans that do like the characters?

We'll shall see.

A review from What the Flick, one of the channels I follow.

I recall one of the reviewers, Alonso, saying he got emotional during the Danny/Clara scene, as well as the scene where The Doctor enjoyed himself after taking the reigns on the sleigh from Santa. (Of note: Alonso hasn't watched Who before the Capaldi era, so he's a neebie with this series).
