Lang class

I have to join in with the 'windows are too big' chant, and the huge ones at the side are way too big to be just textured. You'd need a room behind something so easily visible. They're right about the nacelles too, an odd combination of knife edge straight and round headlights on a curving ship body. I know you dont want to hear this at this stage of the build, but we'd be remiss if we didn't point it out.

To change the window size I'd have to build a brand new saucer, so that's not going to happen. I'll just keep the good advice in mind for the next ship. As for the nacelles, well... to my eye there are enough sharp edges on the raised hull to make the nacelles not look out of place. Of course that may just mean my eyes are sick of looking at the damn thing and can't really see the flaws as clearly anymore... :) And as for the big side windows, yes, I agree and plan to model the arboretum as soon as I finish the hangar deck. All the other windows are UV mapped as well so I will be able to add a bit of variation there too instead of just the uniform glow.

I wasn't really planning on making this model public. It's being built specifically for my fanfic so I don't have to satisfy anyone but myself this time around. :) Though if anyone wants they can have the Carrara or OBJ files of course. But no Poser conversions. :)

Dont let other peoples opinons stop you making anything, you're doing it for you. We know you're not going to start again now, but at least you accept what we say has some merit. I love Miranda style layouts too, but this one is just a little off the mark in some places. There's no model as good as your next one anyway. :)

Thanks, Axeman. I honestly value your advice and that of the others here.

Today I watered the front lawn and hosed off the driveway. The rest of the day was spent working on the USS Eternity's expansive hangar deck.

"Shuttlecraft Palomino, permission granted to land in shuttle bay one."

"Hangar bay doors opening. Standard approach."

"You're too low, shuttle Palomino."

"Ease her in, Palomino. Welcome to the Eternity."

That last shot is obviously closer than this particular model can withstand. The cargo units and other wall textures don't look all that great this close up. But I think it works for more distant shots.

It looks pretty good even close up. Does it curve around and join onto the second bay, or are they both joined to another area in the middle?

Ship looks awesome so far to me :) :techman:
Thanks. :)

The hangar deck is a giant horseshoe-shaped area. Engineering is sort of an island in the middle, under the greebles on top and behind the impulse engines. In the last picture above, you can see the deck angle off to the right. It keeps on going until it connects with the hangar on the starboard side.

The hangers being adjacent to engineering makes good sense, such spaces could allow for on-mission improvised drydock workspaces as well as expansion of said engineering section should the need arise.

Nice looking ship !

Ok, I think we're finally finished. I might go back and put a little differentiation in the windows, but I can feel this little burst of creativity coming to an end so I might not get to it until the next creative flare-up. :)

I won't be doing a Poser conversion like I usually do, but anyone is welcome to the original Carrara files or a straight export.

Cool, I only just now saw this. :)

I like it, but I have to agree with everyone else that the nacelles don't match the rest of the style perfectly, but if you like them, that's what matters. :)

Did you say you built this with Carrera? I don't know many guys around using that... it's always cool to see someone using unique tools. :)

I haven't heard of anyone using Carerra in a long time, I didn't think it was still going. You clearly have no problem with it though, you're knocking out good work each time. I really like some of the design ideas on this ship, some quite unique little touches and features, but it just didn't quite gel together. As you say, these creative bursts come and go, so when the next one strikes you will probably hit it right out of the park. :)

I tried a few of the cheaper/free 3D programs, and the only one I was able to sit down and use right away was Hexagon. The others like Blender and Truespace left me completely stumped. Carrara is basically a beefed up version of Hexagon. It's a bit buggy though, so I'm still gonna try learning Truespace, since I'll never be able to afford something like Max or Lightwave. :)

As for the nacelles, I still might take another shot at them. Somewhere along the line the geometry got so twisted and inside-out that it's impossible to coherently texture map them.

Thank you for posting the ortho and a cool render art of it

There both very awesome to look at :) :techman:

Ok, the Muse apparently had nothing better to do and wound up sticking around for one more day. :) Here's the next version. Better? Worse?

I liked you first version but seeing the new nacelles makes me like the second one far better. They feel right somehow
