Lando Calrissian's Sexuality

Let me get this straight. Donald Glover used the slang word “baby” on Alden Ehrenreich in the movie “SOLO” and suddenly his character, Lando Calrissian is pansexual? Huh?

A lot of African-American men use that word … even with other men. There’s nothing new about this. For some reason, Lando is suddenly “pansexual” because Donald Glover used it on another man … and now the minds of a lot of many are blown because they’ve never heard of such a thing before. Sigh!

Humans! I swear to God.

Lando is suddenly labeled a pansexual because he used a slang word in a way that many do not understand. I just find the whole situation rather laughable.

So do you have a problem with him not being a straight male?
Or do you have a problem because he used a slang word and the producers and actor are behind the decision to make him pansexual?

I myself have no problem with it. The world is made up of more than just straight individuals. Why can't the GFFA be too? Honestly, we don't know the context of how the "baby" is delivered. Lando has always oozed sexuality. Why not make him a little different?

Solo isn't out in theatres yet, so most of us haven't seen the movie, making this thread seem completely out of the blue. Because of this, I did a quick Google search, and found this article in which Donald Glover explains his take on Lando's sexuality. As it's explained in this article, everything makes sense to me and I don't see how him being a pansexual is at all an issue or out of character.

People really need to get out more.

I even knew an elderly white guy who ran a men's clothing store in an African-American neighborhood for decades and was very much part of that community, and he would casually throw around the word "baby" when doing his sales pitches to his customers.

I think it goes back to jazz/hepcat slang of the forties and fifties.

Thank you. That's all Donald Glover was doing. I can't help but wonder if he's having a big laugh over this.

There is still no context to how or why Lando calls Han baby. I stopped watching TV spots for this movie because they seem very spoilery. If someone could actually point to this being the only idea that shows Lando as pansexual, I would agree with the OP as it being seemingly out of place.

But...

The OP seems to be missing some stuff. USA Today’s article reports the following:

In Solo, Donald Glover's Lando is as charming as he's always been since Empire Strikes Back, and maybe even more into his capes than ever before. In the new film, his female droid L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) comments, "I'm sure you noticed that Lando has feelings for me." And, as some fans have noted since the Solo trailer was released, Lando is flirty toward Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich), at one point calling him "baby."

So it’s definitely more than the “baby” bit.

He isn’t being labelled pansexual because of that. One of the writers just suggested he was

Donald Glover has given his two cents, he agrees with it:

Donald Glover on Lando's sexuality in Solo

“How can you not be pansexual in space?” responded Glover as Ehrenreich and Clarke expressed surprise at hearing the news for the first time. “There are so many things to have sex with. I didn’t think that was that weird. Yeah, he’s coming on to everybody. I mean, yeah, whatever. It just didn’t seem that weird to me ‘cause I feel like if you’re in space it’s kind of like, the door is open! It’s like, no, only guys or girls. No, it’s anything. This thing is literally a blob. Are you a man or a woman? Like, who cares? Have good time out here.”

Glover also mentioned that his conversations with original Lando Billy Dee Williams also guided him in terms of Calrissian’s sexuality. “One thing that Billy did say was, be charming.” reveals Glover. “He’s eclectic. He likes different things. He’s somebody who goes around and tries everything, and I just didn’t think about it that much. But I was like, he’s a charming person so I feel like he doesn’t have hard and fast boundaries about everything. But having somebody tell me that, I’m like, okay, cool, makes sense to me. Is it weird that I didn’t think about it that much?”

Pansexual? I have never heard the term before so I looked it up. Some people have to much time on their hands. Saw the movie last night and that never crossed my mind.

It's the nonstraights taking over again, we must all hide!!:rolleyes: Lando was flirty a/f in Empire. So they felt he might be pansexual. Works for me.

Seriously, mods, can we lock this thread up? I doubt anything good will come of it......

I'm kinda adding him to the list of men who could make me question my sexuality to be honest....that seems a good thing

I don’t even know what that word means, but I’m fine with this. Doesn’t bother me at all.

Angst a better word?

And I know you’re fine with it. I’m cool with it too. But some aren’t. And I question how much of it is because of the “baby” thing or how much is because he’s not straight.
