It's not a triangle, not in any real sense of the word. I guess you could call it a triangle in a very loose sense of the word, but even that ended quickly. What it was, was a deliberate campaign of misdirection. Look at the trailers - almost everyone was fooled into thinking that there would be a Kirk/Uhura hookup. People even thought that she was the woman Kirk was having sex with, some newspaper articles even stated that Uhura has a 'hot sex scene with Captain Kirk', based on the trailer. Then they released the bar clip with Kirk and Uhura as one of the preview clips, and Pine and Saldana were even photographed posing as a couple for a magazine cover (I think it was EW), all before the premiere. The publicity for the movie (as well as the early part of the movie) was obvously intended to mislead people into expecting a Kirk/Uhura romance, in order to surprise people even more when they realize it is actuallySpock/Uhura. And it worked perfectly with the majority of people. Well, at least for those who did not read spoilery reviews and comments after the world premiere in Sydney in April. Almost everyone was expecting Kirk/Uhura before the premiere... afterwards, the spoilers about the Spock/Uhura romance spread like wildfire throughout Internet. But those who did not read blogs and fan reviews and remained unspoiled were mostly totally surprised. The movie itself was structured in such a way to fool people into thinking Uhura was Kirk's love interest, with just little hints in a couple of Spock/Uhura scene. and then - bam! - comes the turbolift scene.I wouldn't doubt the author hadn't seen the movie, but the publicity promotions are playing the triangle. The new movie poster has just the three of them -- Kirk on top, with Uhura and Spock on the lower sides.
This was of some concern to me, since I and probably everyone considered the triad to include McCoy. Uhura was introduced third in the movie, after only Kirk and Spock -- and before McCoy. There is something intended; whether it's romantic, I don't know. But it is definitely a triangle.

It's obviously a promotional thing - and it is certainly not geared towards Trek fans. Most of the publicity for the movie was aimed at attracting new viewers. I wouldn't read much into it. Simply put, they thought having a woman there looked better and would attract more viewers than having just guys.
