Lieutenant Watley attends the parade and thinks that augmentation might not be such a bad idea for her future descendants. Mendez feels extremely remorseful about all this afterwards, which contributes in his agreeing to have Starbase 11 care for Pike after his accident years later.
Well, we've only seen him interested in women, but that doesn't mean anything as its only a small bit of his life on screen. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Maybe most don't care one way or the other.
As for April being black, no big deal as I only think we saw him in animated Trek and he was a minor character. Having one of the regular TOS crew changing race or ethnicity would have been a bit of a shock. No need anyhow, just add new main characters as SNW is a brand-new show. Well at this point, kinda newish.
All La'an has to do is change her name to anything else, maybe Chochrane, and then the only thorn stopping her from being happy is an incredibly abbrassive personality that she is only barely pretty enough to weather.
