Disney wanted to change the name of the network to The XYZ. The only reason they did not was the fact that the original sales contract between Fox and CBN has a clause requiring that "Family" always be in the name of the network no matter who owned it.
I'm not particularly sure what the consequences of violating that provision of the contract would be, but Disney didn't want to face them (probably, ownership would revert back to CBN). They want to drop "Family" so bad it hurts, but they can't. It's almost funny.
