Saavik was originally planned to be Captain Morgan Bateson's first officer on the Bozeman in "Cause and Effect(TNG)," but I'm really glad they didn't do that. She would have traveled to and been stuck in the 24th century seven years before the events of TWOK and TSFS.

It would have been so much easier if he said "2287" instead of "2278"!

The thing is, unless they had plans to use Saavik post-Cause & Effect, there would have been absolutely no reason to have Alley or Curtis reprise their role just to have the character stand there and do nothing, much less deal with whatever continuity errors this would cause.

"Cause and Effect" was in season six. By that point it was clear Paramount was largely done with the TOS movies and, by and large, its cast. If it is flipped to 2287, then there would literally be no continuity errors to speak of.

Thanks for the correction. Still doesn't really make much of a difference since, at the very least, TUC was coming to the end of its production and being advertised as the last TOS movie. Saavik should've been fair game at that point for any of the productions to use.

I almost said season seven, since the episode has that dull we're out of ideas vibe.

Yes, but again unless there was a specific reason to bring the character into the 24th century, there would be no reason for Saavik to be there. At least with Scotty, they made the entire episode about him. And even after that, we never saw him again. What would they do with Saavik in TNG?

The less Berman and TNG did with her character the better. It would have been nothing but a minefield of inconsistencies, and never worth it.

If you’re going out of your way to have Alley or Curtis reprise the role, yes. But if she’s just going to stand there in silence in the background, they could have just cast some other actor and said it was Saavik. Or better yet, just don’t make her Saavik, which was what they thankfully chose to do.

What do you mean, "no reason"? The reason would have been a Cheers visual gag.

There was no reason to cast Iggy Pop as a Vorta, but it added to the gaiety of Trekkdom.

It would have been a fun, throwaway appearance, much like Grammar himself.

I get that. But they already had Grammer for that. Did we need Alley? Would we see Wendt and Ratzenberger as officers in the background too?

But seriously, the ‘Cheers’ reference for Alley wouldn’t have worked, because the audience would have connected her with Saavik more than her character in Cheers.

Ending Cause & Effect with a Cheers joke would've been a bizarre choice and I don't reckon it would've improved it at all.

It's possible there might've been a draft where Saavik had one or two lines of dialogue. But the scene as aired doesn't indicate where it might've gone, which shows how unnecessary it was.

Maybe if the roles had been flipped -- Saavik is in the center seat, a first officer played by Grammer is off to the side -- Alley or Curtis might have signed. But then you still run into the problem that the first officer character has no dialogue, in which case Grammer probably would have said no.

Point is, there's nothing in the Bozeman bridge scene that requires anything more than one speaking actor and a bunch of extras. Alley as Saavik would have been a cute addition, sure, but the unnamed, unspeaking, unknown (AFAIK, the actress' name is unknown) extra standing to Grammer's side serves just as well.
