Replace respect with regurgitate and I'll agree with you. Alex Kurtzman has been very respectful of TOS, while still keeping it fresh and doing a good job of modernizing it. While I don't care for every single decision he's made, as someone who saw TIS first run on NBC; SNW is a true spiritual successor to it, and Anson Mount just kills it in the role of Pike, and Ethan Peck really nails it as Spock. The same can be said for SNW. They have mined a bunch of stuff from TOS. In many cases rewriting it.
The thing that fans like about Matalas over Kurtzman is that he tries to respect what came before a bit more than Kurtzman. Was he perfect at it? No. But he was way more on the mark than Kurtzman has been so far.
"Respect" is starting to feel like a buzzword at this point. I feel like when it is used it just makes me cringe because no one can tell me what it means. Respect runs the gamut of "faithful recreation" to "capturing the spirit.Replace respect with regurgitate and I'll agree with you. Nostalgia was the only thing Picard season 3 had going for it. The story was absolutely crap, which isn't much of a surprise considering that Terry Matalis gave us Picard season 2 as well.
And twio that really display how bad Terry Matalis is with just mining Nostalgia to the nth degree:
- the Titan wasn't supposed to become the 1701 G in the original script. Even when they filmed the scene, the name of the ship was going to be the USS Picard, which fits the scene as filmed better Imo. But Terry Matallis had to have the kitchen sink thrown in.
- One of the best things of the card season 2 was the final scene between John Luke Picard and Q, and Q's ultimate 'death' <-- but Terry Matallis already had the idea in his head to immediately undo it as he filmed the cue scene that we saw in Picard season 3 right after they filmed Q's death in season 2. * with Terry Matalis telling John Delancy they may not use the scene they filmed for season three.
So yeah the only thing Terry Natallis has going for him, is his ability to mine nostalgia to the nth degree. With respect to future story lines in a possible Legacy series, he's pretty much mined all the TNG Nostalgia to death.
Define respect. That's the problem is people define respect in so many different ways. I don't think TMP respected Trek for shit.people can try to twist it anyway they want but SNW has not respected what came before. They have totally changed large parts of it. As a spiritual succor to TOS. Yeah ok I can buy that. But as a faithful prequel. No I don't buy that.
Season 3 is so similar to fan fics I wrote when I was twelve that I now feel retroactively ashamed of what I wrote back then. Hell, even the season's whole thing of pilfering music from the franchise's greatest musical hits is exactly how I imagined hypothetical movie versions of my fan fics.
I don't know if I should feel pride that at twelve I apparently knew how to put together "the greatest season ever" or shame that an actual professional production that actually aired on television is so similar to something a twelve year old would imagine.
Season 3 got some of the faithful recreation part down with the Enterprise D. From what I have read that seems to carry a ton of weight in the "respect" department with Trek in the segments that regard is as a historical period piece. That attention to detail seems to equal respect.
But slightly messed up the lights on the consoles for Ops and Conn. They nailed the D down to the carpet fibers and the wood paneling.
That was Geordi's fault. But slightly messed up the lights on the consoles for Ops and Conn.
It very much has.SNW has not respected what came before.

Picard S3 was for the TNG fans. It was the last Season. They weren't worried about attracting new Trek viewers with it as anyone who hadn't seen TNG (and I mean the TNG series as Picard S3 had nothing really carried over from Picard S1 or S2.)A new viewer who only tuned in to S3 to see the TNG reunion (and who didn't see Picard die in S1) might well have wondered why the ship was being named for an active duty officer.
Kurtzman wants Trek accessible for new viewers. He doesn't want to burden new viewers with a ton of backstory.
Now here is why Legacy isn't happening, and you really won't like it: Star Trek doesn't have enough fans to survive. Paramount+ is floundering, they can't get a Trek movie in cinemas to save their lives. Legacy is fanwank aimed at the dwindling, existing fanbase. It won't bring one new person in with it's sequels to 30 year old TNG episodes or what to know what the exact letter of the Khitomer Accords is in 2501. Academy and this comedy thing? Aimed at people who don't normally watch Star Trek. People who like teen drama and comedy. And they are the ones who will save Paramount.
And on that end, it worked.Picard S3 was for the TNG fans. It was the last Season. They weren't worried about attracting new Trek viewers with it as anyone who hadn't seen TNG (and I mean the TNG series as Picard S3 had nothing really carried over from Picard S1 or S2.)
Terry Matalas asked to do a big TNG sendoff for the TNG fans, and Kurtzman agreed to that. They even promoted S3 that way specifically.
The actual discussion in here is very reasonable, but I can't help but laugh when I see the title. KURTZMAN BRUTALLY MURDERED LEGACY!?!!1!1?!??
