Kurtzman gets 5 1/2 year deal with 3 new shows in the works

I choose to be amused that I first saw Kurtzman's name back on Hercules and Xena.

(Xena was the last online fandom I was involved in.)

And he wrote himself into the fourth-wall breaking clip shows on Hercules. I'll never not see him as Ted Raimi in goofy pajamas.

It amuses me that some of the same ones that hated Berman and now hate Kurtzman........now talk about Rick like he was the 2nd coming of Gene. Those rose colored glasses they wear now must me powerful.

Paramount is very pleased, it would seem.

Can't say I'm overjoyed, but it's not a surprise. I will say after a full re-watch of NuTrek, I'm more hopeful for Picard and Lower Decks than I was first time through. With more projects on the production line it might mean we're closer to Discovery wrapping up. Perhaps season 4, with a final season plugged alongside new projects.

Hoping each project has it's own unique core of creative talent.

It doesn't surprise me if there are fans out there who feel that way.

I haven't seen much love for Berman, but I do see it a lot for Berman era employees like Okudas get that kind of adoration. All Mike would do is post a photo of him working on the Enterprise-D model and there's always comments like "real fans like you used to make Star Trek so special, now it's run by people who hate Star Trek".

Unfortunately the likes of Doomcock and Midnight Edge are gaming the YouTube algorithm. Recently it was revealed that the YouTube algorithm favours videos that have a lot of interaction, i.e. comments.

When your spewing hate you tend to get people from both sides commenting and this then gets the video into people's recommendation feed. It's all about money, none of needs to be true they just need people to keep watching and commenting.

Well, you kind of have to wonder how often can the same people be repeatedly wrong about the same thing and still trust each other.

Maybe I didn't read the article carefully enough, but from what I saw it was "Hey Alex! Fans want a Section 31 / Worf / Riker-Troi Family / Captain Sulu / etc.... series!", and Kurtzman responded to each with "We'll see!"...

I came looking to discuss where Trek is headed next and this was exactly my impression. Other than the Section 31 show which they keep "promising" is still on the way, is there any actually official mention of any other potential Trek show out there?

All I have seen is fan and/or actor pitches and hopes.

Starfleet Academy: long-rumored but never actually lands
Worf or Sulu: heavily pitched by the actors and fans, but haven't see any interest
Riker/Titan: popular books, and appearances on Picard and LDS but again no official mention
Captain Proton (limited series?): Again, pitched by McNeil (and seconded by other Voyager cast like Mulgrew), but no official interest
More Short Treks: an interesting project initially, but seems clear it was to fill space and make use of existing assets in the long buildup to new seasons; but with 5 shows in active production, seems unlikely there will be any gaps/need in the near future

Also, if another show gets greenlit will it depend on one of the current shows ending? That has long been discussed as the timing requirement for Section 31, but SNW jumped the line there. Could we get 6 shows in production at the same time?

Will DIS go beyond 5 seasons (my own estimate of the likely minimum season order given the current production schedule and investments in sets/costumes for the 31st century setting), PIC beyond 3?

A Stargazer/young Picard show was also rumoured.

I guess a lot depends on how ST: Picard pans out, whether it's a 3-season series or if more is planned. Presumably Patrick Stewart's availability/willingness is the key factor here.

Assuming it ends after the third season I think there would be some kind of series replacing it in the post-Nemesis timeframe.

I can see the attraction of doing an Academy series given the popularity of teen shows like Riverdale, Sabrina, Elite etc. Get some young, attractive people in the cast and you're away. It would also potentially be a cheaper series to make, as you could make it largely earthbound using locations etc. It's probably something on the backburner rather than a priority. Old school Trek fans would probably hate it lol.

I never had something against Kurtzman in particular and I see, where he tries to go with the TREK franchise. While there are several things, I really like about the new incarnations (e. g. Saru and the Kelpians were a great addition to the TREK species), with all four real seasons of the live action series always was the same problem: the (in my eyes) very poor conclusion of the serial elements at the end of a season. So, many of my hopes lie in 'Strange new worlds'...

Precisely. Goldsman's output quality is wildly uneven. I look at George Clooney in the lead-up to the premiere of Batman and Robin, and then I look at Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn right now, and I want to believe that Strange New Worlds will either be A Beautiful Mind or -- at worst -- A Beautiful Batman.

And I loved I, Robot (I say that as a longtime Asimov fan). I don't think Batman and Robin was his fault really. He also directed some very good episodes of Discovery. Titans is also one of the better DC series.
