Kobayashi Maru

^ There are, and hands move across....well....whatever with the grace of a master musician.

But it only happens in the Stygian darkness.

One question, how come we saw Daedalus Class Starships (noteably The Essex) go the colony. I thought they were constructed later in ST history?

I just finished KM and really liked it. Great followup to TGTMD. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. That Cliff hanger ending will keep everyone wondering what is going to happen next to the Enterprise crew.

Actually we had no idea when the Daedalus class was first constructed. We know when they were *removed* from service (about 40 years after ENT's timeframe) but not when they began.

Have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed KM. It managed successfully pushed forward the story of Entreprise to the beginning of the Romulan War, while leaving us with plent of carrots to keep us waiting until next year. Bugger! A few quick comments:

1) Anyone think Soval's mentioning of the Breen wasn't accidental. I seem to remember an episode of DS9 when Worf said that Chancellor Mow'ga launched a fleet of ships to annihilate the Breen Homeworld in the 22nd Century and that they were never heard from again. Perhaps this is the reason that the Klingons don't take advantage of a weakened Rom Empire / Coalition following the war.

2) Anyone figure out what the deal with Sopek is? I'm still racking my brain trying to figure out exactly just how he fits into the picture. I've had a hard time beliveing he killed Phuong in TGTMD beacuase he was an inteligence liability.

3) What were the deal with those Fre'slen creatures that T'Pol and co. encoutered on Trilan? I've never heard that mission referenced but I'd be curious to see a follow-up somewhere down the line.

4) Awesome to see Kolos again. Long live Kolos!

5) Looks like Columbia will live to see another day. After reading the Chapter 2 exeprt of Desitiny, it soudsd like Columbia survived the attack on AC, only to be KO'd around Tau Ceti sometime later.

6) Best line of the book: "It's begun."

Opinions, boys and girls?

You bring several questions I wondered about myself
I wonder if those Fres'lan aliens may have been caused by the Vulcans the one that atatcked T'Pol said something We were like you once.Wonder if it was something like genetic or medical experiments that went wrong.2 With that comment about the Breen I wonder if they had skimishes with the Vulcan military.Soval dicussions with L'Nel and Solkar about the Romulan technolgy attacking their ships. The fact they destroyed their own ships and the Vulcans not helping Columbia and leaving them defenseless and lying to Starfleet about what happened to Columbia.Could cause problems if the truth came out they could've helped Columbia, I wonder why the Vulcans seemed so determined to cause Starfleet problems keeping so many secrrets. Like that line about the Vulcans having a larger role to play in making Earth an advanced space civilization Soval was keeping secret at all costs.
It's a mystery that I hope will be addressed in future books.

My copy turned up this morning from bookdepository but no sign of my 4400 novel that I ordered at the same time!

From TrekMovie...
Clark adds that playing out these original events in the Enterprise novels has offered additional chances to tighten the show’s place in the overall continuity. “There’s some backwards things that we’re laying into "Kobayashi Maru" that explain why Archer’s ship looks the way it does… and also why the Enterprise of Kirk’s era looks the way it does. It’s actually laid out there in one of the movies, all without techno babble.
Anyone notice anything that had anything to do with this in KM?

No.

The closest movie reference I can think of is:
The Romulans' constant use, in KM, of remote 'telepresence' systems that allow them to take control of any ship they want to. We see them do this with Klingon and Vulcan vessels, and they even try it with the NX-01 - that's why Archer has to abandon the Kobayashi Maru, so the telepresence won't take over his ship as well. This is probably the source of the 'prefix codes' used in ST II. But that's the only such reference I can think of, that KM could possibly have.

sorta along those lines in the books i think we start to see how other things came to be..

due to the nature of the weapon that can take over a ship one can see why they went with such primitive means of fighting the war for awhile such as nukes. i already thought of different ways they could be used for attack and defense in a very low tech way.

one part of the book mentions just how unstable and dangerous is it to try and cloak a ship . this actually ties in what we saw in minefield were the ships just kept on cloaking and uncloaking seemingly at random. as if something was keeping them from staying cloaked for any length of time.

i liked a lot of what i have read so far.. but..
we evidently never get inside of malcolms head about what he really was thinking and felt when he got trip involved in the whole death plot. and in the novel he says something about talking to tpol about why he was getting involved in helping to save trip but we never get this conversation. we have gotten alot of insight so far about archer, tpol and trip about why they are doing what they are and how they feel about it. but malcolm very little indeed.
