Knight Rider "Pilot" - Discussion and Spoilers

I thought NX was going to take care of the commentary threads of this show.

Sorry, I wasn't home :(

Actually I just got home. I'm going to go watch my recording of it. I only saw the last few minutes where Mike introduced himself as Michael Knight.

I posted my thoughts on it from last week's online premiere in the other KR 2008 thread, I don't want to retread by reposting. I'd give it an "Above average" and I'll definitely be watching week to week. It's escapist entertainment that manages to have the cheese factor of the original show while being updated in many respects. I am curious how the original KR mythology ties in and Mike's past. Kudos for giving KITT more interaction with people (mostly Mike).

It felt to me like they were just trying WAY too hard to make it "fun and sexy." There's nothing wrong with that, but you still got to have some fairly solid writing and a consistent tone underneath for it to work.

The tone and writing in this first episode was just all over the place, and was sloppy as hell.

But still, there's plenty of good eye candy and it's harmless enough, so I'll keep tuning in for awhile...

So far it's reminding me a lot of Las Vegas. Which isn't surprising (the showrunner was the creator of Las Vegas).

Why do shows have to portray computer technology as being a CSI: Miami laser light show?

How do we know this Billy isn't the same as BSG Billy? He could be the 12th Cylon! And KITT is the Lord of Kobal!

A few thoughts:

1. This episode felt like a complete throwaway, the only purpose of which was to give Mike his name change. The series starts for real next week. Unfortunately, that's not how it's usually supposed to work in TV.

1a. Not that him changing his name is going to help protect him, Sarah, KITT, and Senator Kelly from Teh Eval Black Ops D00ds. I mean, in the original show, they gave some no-name actor The Hoff's face, and people still figured out he was Michael Long (or at least realized he was up to no good since he didn't exist prior to the summer of '82). Maybe if Mike gets his tattoo lasered off, that'll be a start...

2. Attack Mode version 2.0 is better. It's totally ridiculous, but so was Super Pursuit Mode, and I loved that.

3. Ford F-150 Mode is stretching my suspension of disbelief, even for Knight Rider.

4. Val Kilmer still sucks.

5. Billy & Zoe were the best thing about this episode. I demand more silly control room banter between them, leading to the inevitable hot monkey sex.

^ It's ok [cough]forgot the poll[/cough] :D

Eh you know I'm only teasing. I'm wondering if I'll keep watching this or do my practice test for stats and come back to it later.

Too much "Transformers" tech for me. K.I.T.T. was too impersonal and not nearly snooty enough. Michael did an okay job. Knight Industries meets P.R.O.B.E. Control was an interesting take, although it looked forced, like the director kept shouting "Look busier! Look BUSIER!" into his megaphone. "Billy" read his lines like they'd just been handed to him.

And where was K.I.T.T.'s "microwave jammer" when the hot chick was driving off with the cypher? C'mon, Two Thousand would have ended that chase before it even began.

So after seeing this episode, anyone here want to vote for my Genre babe of the week (Deanna Russo) over in TV & Media?

Yeah, I forgot the poll in my haste. I'll have one next week.

You're right. In the old show, KITT would have either used the jammer or turbo boosted over her and blocked her escape.

At the very least, they shouldn't have been trailing her for what seemed like 20 minutes. lol

I'm not sure if it's a plus or minus that I about hacked up a lung laughing at the initial attack mode and turbo boost. I don't remember the old show well enough, did Kitt always make Cylon noises with his scanner?

It may be base but stripping down to avoid the heat = win. Yowza.

I'm liking the new Kitt voice and the Team Knight command center is pretty cool and fun. It's juvenile but much in the way of the old series, I think I would have really dug this as a kid.
